I've been asked to help a 9 year-old boy work up a 5 minute magic act for his school's talent show.
Do you have any ideas for stage magic that would be very easy for a beginner in magic to perform? thank you, thank you, thank you, thor |

Professor's Nightmare Cords of Phantasia Milk Pitcher Check out Mark Wilson's Course in Magic. There is bound to be some good stuff in there. The course was targeted for that age group and higher. Steven

My son dis a zombie routine than appear a rabbit from the cloth (8 years old) and came in 2nd place.
Winners were 8-graders and they win every year because it is a just about everyone in the class. So basicially it would have won 1st place if the audience wasn't loaded with families from the eight graders.

Something with slush powder, vanishing water from styrofoam cups ! Very baffling and easy to do... plus you can do a lot of wand waving or whatever.

Make up a set of organ pipes and he can produce a large silk from it, Mine are about 8" tal x 3" Dia with a load chamber made from a cut of plastic soda bottle with a hook attached. If you want You can roll the silk up and just attach a hook so your clean at the end and can show the tubes empty if you want, but it's not really necessary. Everyones attention is on the silk and I just put the tubes (pipes) in my box, no-one has ever commented on it.
For those that don't know:- Organ pipes are two tubes one fits in side the other. The load is hung inside, you show one empty, drop the 2nd one through it to prove it's empty (this transfers the load as the hook catches on the 1st one)you can then show the 2nd one empty, place them together and pull the load out of the "empty" tubes. if you want I can scan a page and send it to you. It would be a perfect quick trick for him to learn.

I recomend you the coloring book.It won't place any strees on him.He can make it very participative by asking the audience to help him color the book by touching different colors in their clothing and blowing them from their hand to the book.
Mago Mai P.S.I will be glad to give you more hints on that routine.

If he hasn't performed magic before I would go with something self working and work up a good presentation.

Some of those self-working effects, milk pitcher, square circle, dove pan, liquid appear can, dirty hand towel getsto be pretty pricey especially if this child has no previous experience. Then again if you are lending the equipment or footing the bill, you might work up an Emeril LIVE type cooking spot using the above items and a rubber chicken.
Otherwise the suggestion to look in the Mark Wilson book for some easy to make tricks may be just what you need.
