First time I have had a chance to see Marshal Sylvers show in Vegas (performed by Tom Kaz - an excellent entertainer). Interesting though, even befor tom came onstage, the "voice" over the intercom said for volunteeers to line up in the "bording" area to the right where the dancer was.... Then people got up to volunteer for the show, THEN Tom came onstage... I think that's a tough way to do it, but he had 25 volunteers out of 220 in the theatre. Anyone else see it the way or done it this way?

Did they say announce something to the effect of "The first 20 people in line get to come up on stage..." or anything like that? If they did, I can see how that could work.

Nope it was something like "If you want to be hypnotized, come to the boarding area by the trance-dancer (pretty girl standing in spotlight) and if you are one of the lucky people who is selected to stay...."

I can also see how it would work in situations with large crowds (the numbers are in your favor) or teen-college groups, but Vegas shows tend to be a little more timid. It worked fine, I have just not seen it like that. I have seen people come out, introduce themselves, and ask for volunteers right away. But never have I seen it even BEFORE the entertainer comes out.

If you're a big time performer I see nothing wrong with it. You know that if people are starting to come up before your even on stage that they already trust you. They already know that you are a professional and they obviously WANT to be hypnotized, no matter what. The other bonus is that if you don't get people up on your first shot like that, you can do your pretalk and ask for people again. I think this is a smart way to do it.

I was trained in a number of ways. I watched my mentor perform in some really bad conditions. One way was to ask for volunteers to come up on stage right at the start without any pre-talk. Then do the pre-talk etc. he claimed that the ones that came up off bat were highly motivated and would be among the most suggestable.

I think he has a point but I always prefered to do it other way around.
