Hey everybody. I'm starting to grow an interest in rope magic and was wondering what books or DVD's are the best to start off with?

Hi Eric
Welcome to the magic Café. You can start with the Karl Fulves "self working rope magic" book, The Stewart James encyclopedia, Daryl's three DVD rope magic set, and read lots of old posts at the "knots and loops" section of this forum. have fun. Al

It's also worth checking out Richard sanders Fibre Optics DVD.

Fiber optics is a great DVD but it is not for beginners.

Hi Eric,
I'm on the Al Angello fast track to rope magic and have adhered to the same recommendation he gives you and it's GREAT! I have gone cover to cover in Fulves and just started it again and I watch different parts of the Daryl trio pretty much daily. IMO it has paid off well and I'm having a blast with ropes and knots which I had always discounted as "beginner magic", which is NOT THE CASE AT ALL! This is a wonderful add to what I was already doing and I almost regret not doing it sooner! Good luck and welcome to the Café! Mick |

Thanks all for your tips again. I think I'm going to start with the encyclopedia and ''self working rope magic'', And buy the DVDs when I can afford it.

George Sands, and Mark Wilson are other great sources for fundamental rope magic.

Al,
This is a newbie-type question, but I beg your indulgence. I was at a magic lecture/demonstration in Cincinnati recently (Harry Allen from Daytona Magic; I use to work for him 30 years ago). I picked up the Fulves book you mentioned. Because I am concentrating a lot on honing my mentalism act these days, can you give me some suggestions about where to start. Don't worry about what you think I would like or not. What do you like? Thanks so much, Bobby

I like the false knots at the beginning.
I like the knot on page 23 although when I do it I do it with four or five knots. I like the trick on page 43 although other people call it the Panama rope trick. There is a similar but different trick on page 48. The routine on 77 and 78 is a killer and when done right it will fool a magician. The Hunter knots are clever, on page 100 is the Hunter puzzle knot which I like to do with a ring on the rope. The Hunter bow knot is not there but it is also a must knot to know. Al

Al,
I headed straight for the Hunter's knot, and I was surprised to find out I've been doing it for year. I just never knew the name. Harry Allen showed it to me when I worked for Daytona Magic when I was a teen (so many years ago). How do you present the Hunter's knot? I typically ask my helper if he/she can tie a knot without letting go of the ends. I show them, and I have success but they don't. I then tell them to cross their arms, I place the rope's ends in each hand and have him/her unfold the arms to form the knot. Bobby

Daryl's Fooler Doolers excellent video set has some super (and pretty easy) rope effects which are really fun to practice....

That is pretty much it, but if you put a ring on the rope first it will have a more dramatic, visual effect.

Al,
Thanks. I've tried with the ring on the rope a couple of times, but I have never been too pleased with my presentation. I always appreciate your insights. Bobby

When I do the puzzle knot I add the ring for a brief R&R routine. You have gotten a taste of rope magic, so learn a couple ring moves, and before you know it you will have your own rope routine, and as Joe recommended the Daryl three DVD set is a priceless source of rope moves that you can piece together for your own original routine. Do the puzzle, a couple R&R moves, and finish with the move on page 23 for a finish.

When you get serious about rope work, think Tabary.

Francis Tabary's rope routine is second to none, but primarily for the stage, and to music, unless your name is Smoothini.

I just purchased a book called "42 Amazing Tricks & Stunts With Rope" It is an outstanding book for around five bucks. Worth looking into.
