Hi Guys

I am looking to add 1 or 2 strong visual self working or semi automatic tricks to my repertiore, however due to the type of magic that I do they have to confide to the following criteria.

1 They have to be strong/visual

2 They have to be able to be done in the hands for a strolling around situation

3 They have to be able to be done either with no setup or very minimal setup

4 If they are packet type effects then they have to have a quick reset.

5 It would be nice if the effects were the type that really could be done as an opener in order to warm up and get comfy with the spectators

I know that this is asking a lot of self working or semi automatic tricks but I am sure that there must be 1 or 2 out there. So if you think that you can help me please reply.

Many Thanks

I guess the question would be is how much digging have you done in your own library? Perhaps a good place to start would be the following books that are still available:

Steve Beam's Semi-Automatic series
Aldo Colombini's Impromptu Card Magic and Impromp2
Though not consisting of semi-automatic effects, Phil Goldsteins Focus contains a wealth of material that uses mainly counts and lifts to achieve their end.
Tons of stuff from Stewart James. If you cannot afford the big volumes, then get "The Essential Stewart James"
Effortless Card Magic by Peter Duffie

I am curious as to why you are confining yourself to semi-automatic effects. I have nothing against them, and use them along with SOH effects all of the time. It's the effect that matters!

Well, I hope I have given you some starting resources. There are many other to be sure.

If you have the Tarbell Course in Magic you might want to look there.
Apocalypse has some killer semi-automatics sprinkled throughout.

Best,
Vlad

Hi Vlad

Thanks for getting back to me. You have definetly given me some good starting points for myy search. I am at present looking through my library to see what I can find that fits my required criteria. The reason that I was asking is that I do SOH effects but am looking for a strong self working effect that can be used as an opener in a strolling situation. This is so that I can get relaxed with the spectators and focus totally on presntation.

Many Thanks

Dear Truesoldier,

Try "Greight" from BEST OF FRIENDS III (Lorayne). I, naturally, use it ALL the time when strolling...

Best,

Paul Gordon

Truesoldier,

Definitely follow Paul Gordon's advice on this.

In fact, ANY of Mr. Gordon's magic goes for the jugular and he has a keen eye for structuring an effect with economy method with maximum impact.

Best once again,

Vlad

Thank you, Vlad. Kind words...

I do (perform) Greight a lot. It's easy, but packs a PUNCH!!!

Observation Test by Nick Trost would fit all your criteria. The effect is simple and comes off as an experiment or "observation test."

The effect is such. The magician holds a blue backed deck and a single red backed card, lets say the Ace of Spades. Through some conversation and patter about observations (or any way you'd like to redo the patter), The card is placed inside the deck. With no sleight of hand at all, the deck is now red and the stand alone card, The Ace of Spades, is actually blue backed. The deck is ungimmicked, no sleight of hand, perfect opener since its more of a test, it comes off as a color changing deck effect, you don't need a table or any platform, its visual, and no set up of the deck.

Your only challange now would be to find the source, The Card Magic of Nick Trost, since it is long out of print. There are copies floating around the net somewhere I'm sure, but it won't come cheap, especially if you are just looking for a couple self workers. In either case, I felt obligated to mention it.

Thank you Paul and Ron for both of your suggestions. I will be sure to have a try and get hold of Greight from BEST OF FRIENDS III as I think Harry Lorayne is a great magician and writer. (Well from my experience of reading Close Up Card Magic and watching the international lecture tape)

Also I have to say that the Observation Test by Nick Trost sound really good, so I guess I better get hunting for the book as suggested by you Ron.

Many Many Thanks Guys you have really been helpful.

My pleasure,

If you do find the book, shoot me a PM. Not that I don't think this trick is worth it, but because its out of print the price may be driven quite much. I wont tip the method, but I just want to make sure it definately fits what you are looking for in more detail before you blow the dough. If you indeed just want a couple for your reportoire, there are million others that still might work for you. In any case its just some preventative maintanence so to speak.

I have been looking for this book myself, and it is indeed hard to find. BUT: from descriptions I have read of "Observation Test," I have come to the conclusion that you could do the described effect using the method for a trick called "Reverse Colors" in the book "Self-Working Close-up Card Magic," by Karl Fulves, in the chapter on color-changing deck tricks. Also, in "Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic" there are some color-changing deck tricks in which some of the method would be applicable to an effect similar to "Observation Test." I don't know if Trost's method is exactly the same as either of these, but these other methods would work for Trost's trick.

Paul, indeed, "Greight" from Best of Friends III, which of course is attributed to you, is a wonderful effect. Isn't it a slight variation of an effect you once publised called the "Eight of Diamonds?"

And whilst we are discussing this, has anyone had one of those priceless moments where the spectator 'hits' the actual card bang on?

Hi Roger,

Yes, same trick. And, yes, it's happened 5 times to me; the spec hits on exactly the right card. It happened when I once showed the effect to Peter Nardi from Alakazam. His jaw DROPPED...big time!

Dear Truesoldier

An effect which may fit your needs is The Upside down Deck - Effect 3 In, Scarne on Cards Tricks (A old paper back book with 155 effects requiring simple methods)Granted many are average but there are some gems.

A quick write up - Half the deck is given to the spectator and you keep half . Each of you shuffle your facedown half . Both select cards from their pack, remember it and insert if facedown in the middle of the others packet . Spectator turns his packet face up and you sandwich your face down packet in the middle of their face up packet. The spectator can see the position can see all 3 packets before you close them up. The deck can then be spun through your fist once and at the same time both of you call out the cards you selected. The deck is spread between the hands . All the cards are now face down apart from 2 near the middle which are face up and the 2 chosen cards.

Sorry quick write up so not doing justice to the effect.

Hi Andy

Thanks for the recommendation. If you like using effect from Scarne on Card Tricks, then take a look at effect 50 Flighty Aces. With a little modification this is a real gem.
