No, Thayer I do not think evr made their own flowers.
Surprisedly, Horace Marshall was one of the leading manufacturers for years. He supplied P&L, Max Holden, and many other dealers. Among his customers were Gypsy Rose Lee, Rudy Vallee, Neil Foster and Blackstone. He made several different styles and they were hand tinted in mutiple colors per bloom. Richard

The only one I've seen is McBrides video, there's lots of other magic on it too though. I don't think I use anything from it though.

One thing to remember about Shen Juan. She did not set her act. As I recall backstage in Reno, there were four other people setting everything. As I understand it, it is a cultural program in China that sends these acts to compete.
It was a pretty act but totally impractical in the real world in any venue or situation. Richard

That makes a lot of sense. I would also guess that she has been taught her act rather than created it from scratch herself, just from the way she moves.
Well I'm currently in the process of upgrading my spring flower work, trying all the ideas I've had over the past couple of years with them, and it's going really well. It helps that I can now make my own custom flowers. Paul |

Take the time to hand color your flowers in several tones. It will make them much more lifelike.

I am trying to develop a new Hawaiian themed routine with spring flowers, quick change and ropes.
I call it the Hawaii 5-0 routine since next year will be our 50th anniversary since statehood. Help me critique these acts as it evolves: (July Act) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-43b2Uq7ZM (August Act) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEoRhlaRbwA (October Act) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLXFkRkUyyE |

What are some good sources for learning the ends and outs of the paper cone spring flower production?

I think Abbott's Magic still sells Spring Flowers from Newspaper cone. I have not looked but they may be in the Tarbell Course as well. Not much as changed in the methods over the years. Good Spring Flowers have become hard to find 'now a days' as the best was made/supplied by Franco Novelty Co. but they have stopped making all magic items. Richard Hughes made some excellent ones for a very short time, but the paper is no longer available and he has stopped making them. Now most is made in India and the paper and colors are very poor. Japan and China like the metallic Mylar ones and they do not look anything like flowers. Abbott's I believe has stopped making theirs but they used tissue paper and they had to be handled very carefully. They did have stiff cloth leaves which helped in retaining the shape, but then over time the color would fade from the tissue paper. |
