My flight leaves in 20 hours. Guess I'll be sleeping in front of the Delta counter. Shame there isn't an IHOP near the airport.

Haven't been to a Waffle House in a long time. It was in a small town in Tennessee. Very much in the Ozarks.
I was talking about KCI, but I can eat when I land as well. Since I'll have three hours to kill before Max's seminar. |

SEAM 2008 was an excellent convention with some great headliners. I enjoyed attending the lectures, competitions, etc. immensely, but enjoyed the opportunity to meet and hang out with some wonderful folks even more (those late night...err, early morning sessions were fun). Hats off to Ken, Debbie and the rest of the hard workers over in Ring 9 for putting together a top-notch convention.

It was a great convention -- those who missed it missed out on something very special.
Dollar for dollar, I think it was a better value than the IBM/SAM combined convention. JMT |

The convention was a huge success and I think everyone had a great time. As Joe mentioned people got so much for very little money.
I am very happy for those that came and was apart of the SEAM. We had about 260 people. It was fun putting this together and it was everything I imagined it would be. Thanks again ken |

I liked his lecture, but I'm not easily offended or put off by anything. A couple of years back, Andre Cole started Preaching during one of the IBM conventions and it upset some people then. I thought the whole uproar was silly. Same with this, just be a duck and roll it off your back, like water. The lecture to me was one of the most informatative Ive ever been at. I enjoyed the stories, the opinions and the magic square. Performing is more than the trick, it's the whole thing and those who 'read between the lines' at the lecture, got a lot out of it. His whole part on scripting and why magic is ours and not the Olsen twins was worth the price of the conventions. Again, Im not offended by many things, except for people trying to force their value set on me. If you didn't enjoy it, then that's fine, and if you did, that's fine too. Either way: 1. Hell wont freeze over 2. The sun will still come up in the morning 3. Harry will always be Harry. |

On 2008-08-25 19:57, Margarette wrote: I was also offended and almost walked out, I wish I would've. Below is my opinion of the convention. So far the SEAM convention has been pretty good. Miles and I arrived in Atlanta around 4:30pm Thursday. After we registered, we headed to the Dan Garrett lecture. He did the best stuff from his past lectures and added a few new things to the mix. Later Thursday evening we went to the Silly Billy lecture. His lecture was very informative for children’s performers. He talked a lot about the theory and psychology around kid’s magic and played clips from his new “Seriously Silly†dvd and talked about why those tricks play so well. I missed Joe Turner’s mini-lecture, but I heard it was good. He performed and explained a few tricks by Alex Elmsley. The late night session was great as always. Miles and I hung out with Jeff Pierce and Tom Craven. Tom was fooling us badly with some tricks from his new book. On Friday we went to the David Acer lecture and it was outstanding. He was as crazy as always and had some funny gags in between each magic effect. Overall his lecture was the best yet. Max Maven’s lecture was next and while it was ok, I found it a little dull. He had a very good ESP trick at the end. It was nice to finally get to see him perform in person. I watched the junior close-up contest and James Agan did a great job in the junior contest. He did Chattanooga proud. I didn’t stay for the adult close-up contest because it was really hard to see. That is my only complaint so far about the convention. It is really hard to see the close-up lectures and shows. It appears that the camera work wasn’t thought out ahead of time and was kind of last minute and very hard to see. Tonight was the stage contest and I missed that because I had to get some dinner. I did see Lance Johnson and he was going to compete with his revised whip act. I am sure he did well. Well, I am off to the Troy Hooser lecture and I am excited! The Troy Hooser lecture Friday night was really good. His coin skills are immaculate. He also showed a neat ribbon trick that resembled phases from Dean Dill’s Box routine. I believe the effect is Paul Curry’s. That evening Jonathan Levit, the host of “Celebracadabra,†performed an amazing memory routine that fooled everyone. He had someone choose one of three magazines that he had brought. He had each page numbered with a sharpie marker. The pages were then dispersed among the audience. Audience members could call out random page numbers and Jonathan could tell them what was on the page down to the exact detail. He continued this with about 15 different pages. After his routine, several magic coaches from the show got on stage and talked about how the show got started and how it was received. This discussion was a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. The members took questions from the audience and it was quite enjoyable. That evening in the lounge I overheard Harry Anderson in a heated debate with one of the creators of the show. I had no idea what was going on but he sounded quite angry. More about this below…. I missed the Tom Craven and Amos Levkovitch lectures on Saturday because I stayed up too late the night before sessioning in the lobby. Tom writes a card column in the Linking Ring Magazine, so I’m sure his lecture was great. Amos is known for his dove magic and he also performed in the Gala Show. The close-up show was very enjoyable. The show was divided up in to two separate rooms to make it more intimate so people could see the action. In the room I was in, David Acer opened the show and he killed. He had good magic and was hysterically funny. He had the crowd hunkered over laughing. Dan Tong was next and he did a very nice sponge ball routine along with some other great pieces of magic. Dan Garrett performed some funny bits and closed with a torn and restored card routine that was really good. Joe Turner did a magic/gospel routine that was supposed to be funny, but I don’t know how people took it. I thoroughly enjoyed it and he has some really funny bits. Troy Hooser performed some nice stand up coin routines that were flawless. Then he sat down at the table and did a very well routined ring act in which he ended up producing several finger rings. The show was closed by Tom Craven. He did several card routines as expected and a little act with a puzzle box. Overall, I thought the close-up show was really good. It was kind of hard to see but other than that it was great. Now on to the Harry Anderson lecture Saturday afternoon. As a teenager, I saw Harry perform on television and I thought he was great. I really enjoyed his magic special and had heard great things about him. I have wanted his book for a long time, but of course I couldn’t find it. They had it for sell at his friend Ricky Boone’s booth at the convention so I bought it. A few minutes later I went into his lecture. This was one of the events I had looked forward to the whole convention. One of the first words out of his mouth was the F bomb. I was shocked because there were several kids in attendance. It might have been a different matter if this was an adult convention, but there were all ages attending the convention and the lecture. He went into his rant about Celebracadabra and how he had a discussion the night before with one of the creators who was also at this lecture. Paraphrasing Harry, he said “If magic and religion have anything in common, then Celebracadabra is the Anti-Christ.†He went on and on about how he hated the show and thought it was bad for magic. He has a right to his opinion, but I don’t think this was the time or the place for it. We were there to learn. While he was on his soap box he continued to use foul language and said whatever he wanted without caring about those in attendance. In my opinion, Harry was really arrogant and disrespectful towards Christianity with several of his remarks. At one point I felt like walking out and I wish now that I had walked out. After the Celebracadabra bashing, he talked about where he grew up and how he ended up where he is now. After about an hour of talking, he got into the magic. He showed how he performs the magic square, which was actually quite good, but it still didn’t make up for his attitude. This weekend I lost a lot of respect for Harry Anderson and wish I would’ve never attended his lecture. My ears are still bleeding from some of his comments. Now I can turn to better things. After dinner on Saturday was the final Gala Show. Atlanta’s own Tony Chapek performed his famous television act. He finished in the top six at the IBM/SAM convention. His act is very entertaining and it received a stand ovation. No one else matched up to his performance. David Acer and Ken Scott were very funny during their performances. My wife drove up and she enjoyed these three acts. Max Maven performed his brand of mentalism that almost put us to sleep. I have always enjoyed Max, but in person I found his act to be quite boring. I guess it was hard to keep up with the energy of the previous three performers. The adult stage contest winner performed his award winning act which was very good. The whole act revolved around light bulbs and lamps. It was very original and entertaining. Amos closed the show was his dove act. We are also proud of our own James Agan who took home the Gold for the youth close-up contest. He competed against four other youths and did an outstanding job. He did Chattanooga proud. Overall, I had a blast. My biggest complaints were Harry Anderson’s disrespectful comments and language with children in the room. Also, a lot of the lectures were hard to see. My wife and I could hardly see during the stage show. Most shows are typically held in theater type room, but at SEAM all of the seats were on the same level as the stage and it was extremely hard to see. I enjoyed this convention more than I did the IBM/SAM. None of my views or opinions necessarily reflect the views of our local club. I am just giving you my opinions of the event. -Adam |

Great review Adam.
Sorry you did not enjoy harry. As to the theater type room, sure that would have been ideal. but as you can see we used the biggest room we could get. We tried getting a local theater but it would have meant leaving the hotel and driving to theater which is a hassel and very costly. As you can tell you only paid 99.00 to register for 10 lectures and 3 shows, I think you would agree that you got your moneys worth. we knew the sight lines were going to be a problem. But again the stage could not be any higher as the hotel did not have high ceilings. This was another reason I booked who I did for the stage show because you would be able to see what was going on with their acts. I hope you saw my magic wand.LOL It was rather large. But despite not enjoying harry and not seeing that well and liking it better than the IBM/SAM I would say it was a success for you? thanks again Ken |
