For those who own or have handled both.
Are there, other than the actual engraving patterns, any reasons you prefer one set over the other?

I like the silver ones. No particular reason.

It goes without saying that both are beautiful sets of cups. The all gold cups are also spectacular, as you can see from that clip on Brett's website.
Each of these sets is special in it's own way. My favourite engraving pattern is actually the all gold. The effect of the two contrasting metals in the silver & gold cups is lovely and the gold-washed interior looks spectacular when you tip them over. If I had to go for just one set though, I would go for the all silver engraved cups. They look classy and there's something special about them.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I have the Silver and Gold and prefer them for the reason mentioned by Mr. Evans; the gold interior looks spectacular when they are tipped over. I also like the more “Celtic” look of the engraving on the silver and gold. I have yet to use them at a gig though… I’m afraid to take them outside. ;-[
I should just get a set of little red plastic cups and maybe have them engraved ;o) Steven |

Yes, they do look great. Then again, the silver's look great too when turned over!

Watch Johnny Thompson's video for a great look of Silver and Gold.
Watch John Mendoza doing the vernon routine where he uses the all Silver. The balls seem to show better to me when the interrior contrasts with the exterior. I like all the cups that Brett has made. Like Richard above, I like the pattern on the Gold cups the best but like the look of the Silver and Gold contrast. There is something that is classy about the engraved cups. Like Chessmann said..to each his own. Mobius |

I wondered if the gold plated cups might begin to show wear in the areas where contact is most frequently made?
Have you seen Brett's new copper and brass engraved cups? Very nice as well. |

I've had these cups in my hot grubby little forepaws. Regarding the all gold cups -- wear is definitely a consideration. That's one of the reasons I prefer all silver. Michael Vincent was over about a week ago and tried out several of the sets of cups. He likes the brass engraved ones in the new series.

From the photos, I prefer the engraving patterns in the brass over the copper a little.

I am hoping my silver & gold set will wear well since the gold is minimal. I am trying to come up with a carrying bag design to offer a little bit of protection from cup wearing against cup during transportation.
With the all silver set you don’t have to worry about that. Yes, the Sherwood brass engraved are excellent, the design has a nice Celtic feel to it. Steven |

All silver baby. Of course, I've only handled the others at Magic Live when Brett was showing them off. Long before I ordered my own. I've never liked anything in gold. All the Jewelry I wear is silver or white gold. Even got rid of my Johnson cups because I just don't like the color, so it's personal preference. However, on Brett's cups, I like the engraving pattern on the silver/gold better.

If you will go to a department store that sells silverware or to a jewelry store that sells flatware, you may be able to purchase special silver cloth that contains a compound that limits tarhish. You can cut some pieces about 9 inches square out of that and put them between the cups. Matt: Michael has a friend over here who lives a couple of miles from me. He came over to take a week's vacation from London and to visit Houston. He was here last year to do a lecture. I invited him to see the museum anytime he was in town, so I think he had planned to visit as part of his vacation. He was not prepared to do a lecture or performance while he was here. However, H&R Magic Books talked him into doing a lecture on Saturday afternoon. He performed his cups and balls routine the last time he was here.

Bill ...not that it really means much but go look at the video of Johnny doing the routine and you will see that the cups he is using are the Paul Fox Silver Engraved with Gold interrior ....not the ones pictured on the box that are Ross Bertrum Chromed engraved which are copper. Johnny said he had Brad Holbrook make two sets of these cups, one he gave to Charlie as a present and one he had made for himself. There is a sleight difference in the engravings. They also discuss the Chromed cups on the Stevens tape on Cups and Balls.
It was just bugging me for some reason. I have a friend that has the gold ones and he uses them ofton. They have not worn in the four years he has been using them. He performs the cup through cup move and depth illusion with it....no problems. Later, Mobius |
