The extra Mipro speaker over here is sold as an optional extra. As it's powered it's quite expensive. It's not a slave extension.

How much does a Mipro 707 cost in the USA? I must check and come back on the UK price. They are not inexpensive here.

And on the matter of power. It has a 24v DC input socket. Can you buy a portable source of 24v DC power in the USA?

I have only found 12v DC in the UK which is unsuitable. The power output is too high. (A lower output PA running on 24v can get away with 12v although the output would be reduced).

HI Tony,

I didn't realise the MA-707's extension speaker was powered. I know that recently Mipro has changed a few things with the 707 model. When I was in Taiwan last July I went to the managers office and he was showing me their new catalogue. I used to have a Chiayo similar to the Mipro 707 which had an extension speaker that was just a slave. The MA-705 ext speaker is only a slave as it was very cheap to buy. Something like 80 quid I think.

Most of the work I do is close up in restaurants. I also perform some stand up shows for small groups, both children and adults. Up until now, I didn't feel the need for amplification. Then last week I performed at kids program held in a fast food place. The noise was everywhere. A little amplification would have been nice. I made it through the show OK, but my throat was sore at the end. I now have another show coming up in a week or so that is in a restaurant that I know is very noisy. Once again, a little amplification would be nice.

After reading this thread and following all the links, I have purchased a small system the Nady WA 120. Thanks for the link Alan Munro! Does anyone else have this system? Any comments from those who do?

Regards,

Brady

At the risk of being laughed at, I'd like to offer my Cheap-O alternative. I'm using a K-mart-type karaoke machine that I paid about $65 for 15 years ago. It's got two mike inputs, a remote speaker jack, dual cassette decks (I told you it's 15 years old), and the mic came with it. It runs on AC or batteries and it works well for crowds of up to 100 kids. If it's 25 kids or less, I can do the birthday party without amplification. But using high-end audio for a kids birthday party, well, God bless you if that's what you choose, but it ain't for me.

Well, I have to admit that little black K-mart stereo system you have sitting on that chair behind you, looks very cute and antiquated indeed. Good luck and God's blessings to you.

Bridgewater,

The system was only $100.

If you don't mind walking over and pushing play on the cassette deck, and changing out tapes, having backup tapes (all cued to the right spot) and being hardwired to the unit...the K-Mart system might be fine. OR...there's the option of taking your girlfriend, wife (or both?), boyfriend or husband with you to sit and start/stop the music. I prefer not.

Steve,
Since you expressed concern about changing out tapes, I'm curious. How many different recorded pieces do you use for a kids birthday party?

For a GOOD (better paying and NOT in somebody's house) birthday party, I might use some music, an intro, no more than 2 audio-based routines, and a close. Stage/platform shows are a different animal. 20 minutes of pre-roll music with comedy liners between the tracks, an intro, 2-3 (at most) audio-based routines. Couple comedy audio drops during the show...and a good closer. Some music rolls as the audience is leaving, as well. If the birthday party is somewhere of decent size and a good venue (church fellowship hall or something larger), I'll use audio.

I use (as most people know) an Explorer-Pro speaker/amp with built in wireless mic, can be run on rechargable, built-in battery. For the audio itself, a Virtual Soundman "iCue2"...for library and shows like that, I'll use the "iPrompter" scrolling display to go with it.

My "iCue2 PA" (everything built into one unit, speakers, wireless mic and iCue2 system) should be in later this month. That will simplify setup.

It seems like you've been waiting for that system for ever Steve. What's with that?

He's trying to see if it's gonna need a cooling fan for the amplifier chip. Only way to test that is on the bench BEFORE you send one out!

For my larger shows I use the Fender Passport 250 Plus. The output and sound quality are both excellent. The only downside is the weight of the unit. This definitely is not something I would consider lugging around to birthday parties.

Having said that, however, it seems that many people like the Fender products. Having done a little bit of searching, I found the following product:

http://www.qualityelectronics.net/fepap1upasy1.html

It seems to be very portable and comes with 3 different types of UHF wireless headsets. Does anyone have any thoughts or expierience with this unit?

Well, that explains it Steve. Most of my birthday parties, 200-250 annually, even the better paying ones, are "in somebody's house." I'm not sure what you define as "GOOD." I suppose if I'm booked to do a kid's party in a stadium I'll need more powerful gear.
