This week I found that the cheap rope is back at WalMart in the housewares/hardware sections.
It is 100' hanks for $1.00. The rope is #6 cotton rope (also called 21 pound rope). The product number is 076356241952. It doesn't look like they get but about 2-3 dozen hanks per store. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Thanks for the tip Bob! Now I just need to work up the courage to make a run down there during Christmas season!

Hey bob, I know that cotton rope is the Holy Grail, but cheap rope at Walmart??
I have never seen any rope at walmart that has the feel of good cotton magicians rope. http://www.rope.ws Cheap rope to me is like saying you can get magic silks at walmart. That would make you bristle a bit. I have been trying to track down the manufacturer of Euro rope. I called Camarand and he doesn't want any more distributors other than Murphy and Show-biz. Once the Euro rope becomes less pricey, I believe that more magicians will stop seeking walmart ka-ka. The India rope smells like formaldehyde, and foam core rope is a toy. There is just nothing like Georgia made in the USA cotton rope, but alas, they stopped making that.

I'm spoiled on the nice, soft thicker rope, even for practicing.. ..

I for one refuse to support Wal-Mart by purchasing inferior magicians rope made by poorly paid child laborers in China.
I much prefer my traditional Magicians rope made by poorly paid child laborers in India.

I buy my magicians rope at Lowes.
I think it's made in China. I'm sure those guys are getting rich. By the way... Payne, that was beautiful, in a sad commentary sort of way. I don't use silk, but my silk-replacement stuff is from Fred Meyer. I think that's from India.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I was teasing Bob, cause he imports and sells fine quality magicians silks. I thought if I said I'd get silks at walmart, he'd buzz back at me. He hasn't read it yet.

Being a cowboy and magician I know Bob is hip to good silk.... Anyone who has done a winter round up or spent any time at all on a horse in cold weather has a nice collection of "Wild Rags"! Most are a 36X36 silk used as a scarf and come in a wide variety of "Wild" colors and patterns! I have at least a doz.!

No, no, Bob is a magicians silk importer. Haven't you ever read his email silkmagic@dovelite.com , he does a lecture and brings an entire line of silks to sell.

I like cheap rope for my Cut-and-Restored Rope. I start out about 15 feet and use it show after show after show until it is down to about 5 feet and my wife yells at me that it is time to get a new piece of rope. I like cheap for a buck.

There is no one cheaper than I am, but, when it comes to magicians rope. You must make a choice. Any slob can cut a clothes line and restore it. The finesse moves that are possible with quality magicians rope are what separate the amateur from the artist. If you can't slide the knot, or bend the rope in absolute half then the rope you use will make the difference.
You need soft, cotton rope over cotton casing or cored rope. It must be unbleached or colored white, but the key is how stiff the rope is. Nothing you can buy at Walmart will work well. I will be getting Euro or Elite rope and using that from now on, and I sell the old style magicians rope online at http://www.rope.ws, but have outgrown it. Magicians from all over the world have the option to buy $1 rope at a hardware store, but I guarantee that those are the magicians that only do a 2 minute routine once in a while and are not rope artists. I mean, you can reach under your sink and get a sponge and do sponge magic, you can use plastic picnic cups and do cups and balls. In my eyes you will be (to quote Letterman), the "kmart magician".

I do three different C&R routines and clothes line will not work for two of them. I also feel more comfortable with 1/4" rope, and not that 7/32" stuff they pass of for magicians rope at magic shops these days. I was lucky enough to get a 1,600' spool of 1/4" cotton core rope last year and I don't know what I will do when it is gone.

If like me, you enjoy doing Whit Haydn's Mongolian Pop-Knot, you will go through a great deal of rope.
Cutting Elite rope for that routine would feel like cutting one of my blood vessels. I'll stick with cheap rope for that effect. Andy

So, your saying save the elite rope for the non cutting routines, and use the old fashioned cotton for cuts. Sounds good to me.

If I did that there would not be room for me in my office. I send old tricks to magic auctions, and to the trash can all the time. Because of my constant recycling and clean up, there is a narrow path from the door of my office to my chair.

Personally, I would never use the Walmart rope in a live performance, but I do use it to practice cuts when I am learning something new.

Ian,
This rope comes from China too. Home to the newer more successful WalMarts! So far China has invested $20 Billion more in the USA than it has taken out in 2007. Meet your new banker, stockholder, mortgage holder and employer! Americans don't save so they also can't invest. Someone else does it. Real cowboys do use real silk. (The best piggin' string I ever had was silk. See MickeyPainless for a translation. After all, in the ropin' box the piggin' string is in your mouth. It's used too! The sooner you catch and throw your calf, the sooner you can spit it out. It's about as sanitary as eating at salad bar.) Cowboys eat a ton of Chinese food too. On ranches they do many of the jobs that aren't from horseback. For years I did use Georgia made rope for magic. My supplier disappeared. I do still use the scissors from poultry plants to cut the rope! They are very good for the purpose. Under stage lights, white cotton looks bigger than the substitutes the same size. Tape it and compare! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Saturday I went back for a Christmas meal at the old home place. I passed miles of open deserted cotton land going to waste. The people who used to work it work in the foreign owned car plants in Alabama now. The market for cotton is overseas. Foreign shipping controls the shipping. Cotton here is an import item. |
