I have an opportunity to work a consumer trade show in a couple months & have never worked in this type of environment before. This is being looked at as purely a new experience for both myself & the distributor & I am interested in any insight others may have as how I can create new opportunities through this venue & any added advice others may have to offer.

When you say "work a consumer trade show," what exactly do you mean? Were you hired to provide stage shows or strolling entertainment to help draw people to the event? Were you hired to represent a firm in their booth? Or are you renting a booth (or bartering for one) in order to generate leads for your services?
In the first case, you should maximize the publicity opportunities by providing high quality photographs, graphic logos and a show description for all the printed promotional materials. And offer to do teaser media appearances to help promote the consumer show. In the second case, you are hired to represent a firm and you should focus on helping them generate leads at their booth. Try to get them to do an advance postcard mailing to their clients, promoting your booth appearance. Then, on your breaks, visit other booths to do a little networking with other vendors. Finally, if you have a booth at the show and are looking to book your own shows, you might want to try some sort of drawing for a magic set or other gift in order to collect leads. Regardless what type of booking you have, try to maximize the publicity by getting your name and photo in the press whenever possible. Jim |

There are many obstacles to consider prior to showing up at a Consumer event. Here are just a few possible obstacles: - Who is attending and why? - Huge crowds at certain times of the day(s) - Very Loud atmosphere - Often narrow aisles - Often Zig-Zag layouts which means your client's booth may not be on a straight path through the hall. - Lot's of people walking around with drinks and eats. Not bad but can mean a lot of cleanup - Might be a family show and that means lots of babies and kids. Again not bad but they do cause a performer to be prepared a little differenty than at a more focused show where the attendees are there for different reasons. Trade Shows that many of us work generally draw an audience of people who are part of a specific industry and attendees are there to learn about the products/services that will earn them profits, benefit their customers, clients or patients. Of course there are also many trade shows where the attendees are there to purchase products/services at the show. One such show would be the "Gift Show" where attendees are mostly in retail and are looking for wares that they can resell. Premium shows attract vendors who are in many different businesses such as a distributor of many premium products that they will sell to individuals, companies and Corporations. The attendees who go to a consumer show are not all looking for the same type of product and/or service. There are Auto shows where that's what people go to see. All of the new and future models of autos. Not likely to make a purchase at the show... Just looking. Attendees who go to a "Home Show" are usually there to learn about something they are interested in... windows, appliances, Hot Tubs, etc., for their home. Without knowing what type of consumer show or what your Distributor clients' goals may be I'd say that your main job would be to attract attention to your client's exhibit. If you choose to also deliver communications about the distributor or their products/services you'll want to ask very specific questions, hopefully prior to making the deal or agreeing on a fee. Let me know if you are going to deliver a pitch for the client and I'll send you my list of 29 questions that you must ask. In fact if anyone here wants the list, drop me a line at anton@zellmannuniversity.com and I'll send you an early Christmas gift or belated Chanukah gift… Love from AntonZ |
