Hey - I am an experienced amateur (is that still an amateur?) and I do close-up magic. I absolutely love fire magic. When I first started doing magic, I bought flash paper and a few gimmicks, with no idea how to use them. But now I find myself pulling out my fire wallet as often as I can. The same with Serendipity (ring or coin to inside of lighter), my own take on Sankey's "In a Flash" and a number of straight-forward flash paper/cotton applications. I'd like to learn/add a lot more fire/smoke stuff to my close-up. Usually, I perform strolling, so any recommendations for stand-up illusions that can be done a few feet from the spectator are ideal.
What is your best or favorite close-up fire illusion (or what are your top 5)? Any definitive books/DVDs would be great, too. |

No one else with an opinion here? This board seems kinda anti-fire.

Presently my favourite is David Stone's Duncan - in a flash a goldfish appears in a glass of water. This is from his Real Secrets Of Magic Vol.2

I love an effect created by Kevin James... I've added a few tweaks of my own. Basically you levitate flash paper, light it and out flies a real butterfly. It's got the "wow factor" and is really an elegant touch.

Hi Katherine,
That definately sounds like a fantastic effect. I have just ordered his Floating Rose DVD. Is this on one of his DVD's? Thanks, Eric |

That sounds awesome with the butterfly. Gotta keep 'em in the fridge?
I like the levitation, too. I don't think I've seen that. Seems great for a restaurant with candles. |

There is a real shortage of fire magic material. I've had to invent my own; a few I do include:
- waving hand over lighter to create fire from palms with home-made gimmick using a Raven, with an ending where I slap the fire hand into my apparently empty other hand, which explodes in flames and produces my business card - lighting what appears to be a $50 or $100 bill on fire, then, after it slowly burns for a second it explodes into a small ball of flame and the bill is restored (inspired by Darwin's Encyclopedia) - I use a little flash cotton when doing the cig through coin effect Kranzo's fire coins routine is very good, but I only use part of it now in my routines. The flame in palm to stack of coins effects called Pyris is good, but, since I'm Canadian, I've had to make my own. Portable flamethrower is awesome, but it is quite a rig to casually carry around sometimes. The classic cig vanish in flames using a tt is always a big hit. Third Degree Burn and Fuse can be good fire related transitionary effects for moving in or out of a fire routine. Hope that helps.

Whoa! Thanks! Just what I was looking for.
I definitely want to check out the fire coins and Pyris. |

Eugene Burger's handling of ashes on the palm. Truly excellent, and totally memorable.

Robert Harbin's "Will O' The Wisp." I included an updated version of it in my Dollar Store Magic collection (on my site) under the title "Party Cup Magic."
