Heya guys! I've finally decided to post this coz I really need to take my research one step further. I've been looking around for an extremely long time for a 30 mins kids show with the right material. I do perform my fair share of kids shows but I've always wanted a better show to present. I've never really enjoyed by kids shows coz I know it could be better. SO here goes, I'm sure that there are very experienced kids performers here and I would like to know what you guys have in your shows. considering its a 30mins show, whats your show line up?? I'll include mine to get things going. This is jus for me to study other shows and get ideas to improve mine. Thanks guys!

Dove act
21 century silk and change bag routine ( interactive)
Rope routine ( done to music)
Vanishing Bottle ( interactive sucker )
Mouth coils ( interactive with music)
Fire act

Whats your line up??

The fire act is a signature piece and has many fire safety messages before the act. Plus, my fire act gets me most of my bookings.

Well hey some magicians do fire for kids , I used to but don't risk it anymore . Now I created better ways to use my chick pan , but when thier older kids such as ages 8 and up I will use fire book.

If you ask me though I wouldn't mix fire with kids because when the kid thinks he can do "magic" and copyed everything "kyle" did and the fire didn't change into a dove or etc and the house burns down , you can except yourself to have a lawsuit.

Review the above to enhance your show.

Listing what tricks we perform says almost nothing about the quality of the show.

In the interest though of keeping with the thread I will list what I do.

Warm-up (song and dance)
Plate-spinning
Human Ring Toss
Professor's Nightmare (been doing my routine for well over 16 years)
Puppets (Rocky Racoon and Squeeks the Bird)
Juggling
Balancing
Straightjacket escape

Note: This show is actually longer than 30 minutes though. The SJ is 10 minutes in length alone.

Which is why yeahidomagic, I stress on the kids not to attempt any of what they see at home. I ask everyone below the age of 12 to raise their hands, ask the parents to raise their hands and I tell the parents to inform the kids that wat they are about to see is done by a professional and that I have been injured many times attempting what they are gonna see... Trust me, when my tone of voice changes on stage, parents, teachers, guardians, and the Kids pay attention. I've got it covered.

Currently, my favorite school show is:

1) Warm Up
2) Peanut butter & jelly w/pickles & Spaghetti os
3) Axtell's board/Instant Magician/TT & streamer in ear
4) Bigger Wands /Doty Scope/ Bongo Hat (no magic, just fun)
5) Misers Dream/Invisible ball & paper bag
6) Linking Hula Hoops (my invention, different than the old published version)

This is about a 45 - 55 minute show, depending on the size of the audience and how I present it. The bigger audiences take more time.

My standard kid/family show:

Prof Nitemare
Pom Pom Pole
Jumbo Invisible Deck w/ 52 on 1 Card (if there enough older kids to warrant this)
Mike Bent's routine for Tricky Bottles
Coloring Book- I use Docc Hilford's terrific routine from "Gentlemen, Start Your Audiences". If the audience is mostly older than 7, I leave this out and add something else in its slot.
"Howzzat" the Clown
Closer- either PB & J, or Wolf's "Hip Hop Magician"

Running time- 42-45 minutes.

depending on how often I've worked for a particular venue, and the likelihood of repeat audience members, I'll switch some stuff in and out. The Pom Pom Pole ALWAYS stays in; every show, every age, every audience.

Terry, I use the I.D. too for older kid audiences.

Question: do you make the jumbo deck appear in any way? I make the small ID appear (via an egg bag, they toss the ID up to the stage while I hold the empty bag open & as I catch it, the ID visibly appears to land in the bag) it's a very nice moment in the routine, I am trying to think what I could to make a jumbo ID appear? Any suggestions? I don't really want to lug in a square circle just for that though. Jumbo egg bag? Haven't seen one...

Thanks.

Hi Bill, That's an interesting start to your show. I still haven't finalised my second show and am still chopping and changing it but I was considering doing plate spinning directly after the warm up but changed my mind thinking I should leave a non-magical routine until nearer the end of the set. Is this a problem you ever come across?
Do the kids care that they don't see any magic until well into the show or is it a case of they're having fun so their not bothered?

Ashley, I'm sure Mr Parrett will furnish you with a proper answer when pops in, again but I think making the invisible deck visibly visible is a nice touch (I like the egg bag idea) however you don't always have to do it or can do it in a gag fashion.Adapting your egg bag idea and clipping it with your finger in a large paper bag and dropping it on cue could work. Not really magic but still visual and keeps with the plot.

To the original question. Here's my standard show. It lasts 50 minutes:

Warm up and Yell-up (Shake my arse and muck around with multiplying balls)
Invisible Hanky juggling
Wobbelina Monkeypants
Clown routine
Norman the Raccoon

Kyle, your show runs like this:
Dove act
21 century silk and change bag routine ( interactive)
Rope routine ( done to music)
Vanishing Bottle ( interactive sucker )
Mouth coils ( interactive with music)
Fire act

...I'd humbly suggest that the ONLY routines here that sounds appropriate for kids are the 21st Century silk routine, and Vanishing Bottle, as they're interactive.
A typical show of mine goes like this:
song with pirate guitar
intro
warm-up
trick with birthday kid, such as silk vanish or PB&J (peanut snot is my version)
puppet routine
trick with 2 or more kids such as Kandu's Comedy Carton
finale trick, a big prop production device or similar.

I normally add another puppet routine and the Funhouse after tea, which delivers a total of 1 hour of magic. I also run games and make balloons for the kids, to provide a complete 2 hour party. For Birthday parites, my clients don't have the option of 45 mins or 1 hour, as they think my fee a bit steep for such a short time.
For public shows, etc, I charge the same as the whole 2-hour party, but only offer 1 hour shows. If a client really insists, I sometimes agree to give a 45 minute show, for a small discount.
