Hey all,
I admit, I have never before actually used flashpaper, never had the urge to. For the last two weeks, though, I have been playing with it quite a lot and am not happy with the result, wich is simply put pain on the fronts and backs of my hands. Noone has ever told me how to handle flashpaper so I just tossed that *** stuff with a coin into my left hand to produce the object and I couldn't keep my mouth from yelling "ouch!". Is it normal to hurt your hands and I am just too girlie or is there a better way to handle flashpaper, maybe even some literature about it? Is the size of the pieces I use too big, is my timing wrong? I've seen Kevin James perform his Perrier with a twist many times. Every time he turns the flashpaper into the bottle he loudly yells "Ou ou ou!!", wich to me diminishes the effect, since it doesn't feel right for the viewer. Any help would be appreciated. Phil

One more thought.
May the paper I use not be dry enough yet? How do I dry it out so it's ready to go?

If your burning yourself, then you're NOT using it right! The more paper you use for the burn, the longer it will take to burn thru. Use less paper.
Also, to dry it out, just lay it out on a table overnight...that will do the trick!

Dude, you gotta drop the paper before it burns your fingers... it is an illusion!
As far as Kevin James is concerned, I'm guessing (without seeing his act) that he's acting (rather well, it seems). I do a lot of fire eating and juggling and I can assure it I don't burn myself... in less I do something wrong. If you want to learn more about fire, I'd recomend you take a look at "The Professional's Guide to Fire Eating: Book & DVD Set" by Brian Bushwood... it's a very straight forward education that, when mastered, get FANTASTIC reactions! |

Another suggestion:
If you are burning your fingers to crisps (and you kinda need those as a magician....), try adding a twist to your effects... I don't know what you use the flash paper for, but in my routine I levitate the flash paper then light it while it's levitating. It looks cool and saves your hands until you get use to flash paper. The book mentioned above is a good resourse, but should not be the only thing used to teach one's self to eat or breath fire. As far at the flash paper is concerned, you don't hold onto it while it burns, if you wanna produce a coin, light the paper, toss it up, and in mid flight, right when the paper is about to burn out, pluck the coin from it. If you play with fire you will get burned on occasion. It happens. But you should not be getting burnt every time, so you are either using too much paper or handling the burning paper too directly. If you have to handle it more directly, try the cotton, it burns a lot faster.

Mr. Freak
Do you not see the comedy here? This guy can't figure out that he's supposed to drop a "match" before the hot part gets to his fingers! He's EXACTLY the kind of guy you want to watch doing fire tricks! I can't wait to see his scorched face on YouTube! Toung flambe! Any way, I've learnt a few things from The Professional's Guide to Fire Eating and the flash phamplets. It is possible to learn how to play with fire... but I'm not retarded. Dube sells this information and I'm apt to belive that it's not super dangerous... it simply presents the illusion of danger. |

I found that it is easy to hold flash paper in small squares like from flash pads. I learned how to resist the pain with conditioning. I applied the techneques that I was taught learning samoan fire knife. By slowly introducing flames to the parts of body that you want to condition.
ps Your not girlie in anyway if you can't hold on burning flash paper. also professoro you are naive to think you can learn circus acts from books. You truely need a teacher to guide you through safe practices. Not books. you can learn a downs palm from a book but not something that puts people in danger. and by people that includes yourself. |

Right before you get burned, let go of the flash paper. At the moment it nears your fingerss. It will look as if you held it. The flame created by the burning paper will temporarily "blind" your audiene so they will not even notice that you let go.

ProfessorO, apart from burns and the danger of blow-back, did the book warn you about some of the long-term dangers of fire eating? Among them are the detrimental health effects from swallowing fuel (which does happen when you eat fire- it can't be avoided)?
You're fooling yourself if you think fire eating isn't dangerous.

Also, if you can't avoid toasting your digits, try a different approach.
use a Fism Flash or that other electronic flash item whose name I can't recall although I own one because it has a toe switch, which Fism Flash did not when I bought my last. But if your goal is to temporarily blind your audience or simpy to startle them, this approach is better than flash paper because it is safer, and is nearly immediately reloaded for another flash.
