Last year I've tried to figure out what the exact trick was that Levin taught Reich in Auschwitz, as briefly mentioned in the book ’The Death Camp Magicians’.
Without success. Does anybody know? Thanks, Luc. |

Thank you JNeal for the video clip of 1937, a year before Kristallnacht! In a wiki link, I found that Kalanag/Schreiber performed on the Ed Sullivan show in 1960! Anyone know about this show (ie what might have been said about it, coming just 15 years after the war)? Lynn

Hi Lynne!
I saw that Ed Sullivan show in which Kalanag appeared. Are you sure it was 1960? My memory is a bit fuzzy. I thought it was earlier than that. He did several tricks with small props. I think that one of them was a tear apart rabbit or dove vanish. It may have been Abbott's tear apart box with the newspaper sides. Then he did his levitation routine, which you saw in the '37 video. I have two of the souvenir program books (price, 50 cents) I can find no date(s) mentioned regarding the tour. Harold Steinman is listed as the "producer". Sam Shayon, New York showman and producer is listed as an associate with Steinman. I vaguely remember gossip that many Jewish theater owners, would not book the show, due to Schreiber's association with the Nazis. I don't know how true that may have been.

For awhile Schreiber/Kalanag and P. C. Sorcar had an ongoing "feud" about which of them was the World's Greatest Magician!
Jay and Fran Marshall saw Sorcar's show in India. Jay said it was the greatest show that he had ever seen.

I know Kalanag played Boston in 1957.

This is all very interesting! Apparently, the 3rd Reich did not consider stage magic to be 'decadent'... or did they? Somehow, I associate stage magic with cabaret entertainment. Thank you so much esp to those who actually saw Kalanag and others. I could possibly have seen him, when I was 13 yrs old, on Ed Sullivan in 1960 (the date comes from Wikipedia, which is not always accurate); but I wasn't into magic as much as I am now! Lynn

Be nice if someone in Magic and TV - would get all the film/tapes of Magicians on the "Ed Sullivan"(maybe, even Vents) Show and make a CD of ALL of them. - I'd buy it.

Jay Marshall held the "record" for appearances on the Sullivan show.
I recall introducing Jay to someone as the record holder. Jay smiled and replied: "THAT money has all been spent!" Mark Leddy, was, I believe, the "talent coordinator" for the Sullivan show. Mark was also Jay's agent.
