Ok, I have a question.
What stimulates you all, when it comes to magic? For me it’s mainly music. I come up with most of my routines, even the talking ones, because of hearing a certain piece of music. So, what pops your thump tips? |

I don't have the skill to originate whole routines, but need to find something different for repeats and when I want to start a different type of show.
So I gather as many routines and related equipment for the particular trick I want to add (which is a bit easier for a dealer) and then work out what I believe is the best routine for me to present. Mosty from what I read or have in the way of props plus any touches I can think of based on my experience. My main stimulus is the need to please the audiences I have and to attract more.

What gets me juiced (thanks Emily; good luck at J.O.s) is finding what it is I can bring to magic that gets my audience into the performance. Into it so much that they want the magic to be real...and then they make it so.

From a creative standpoint, it's the weird, the strange, the impossible!
I ask myself; "What if?" or "Wouldn't it be weird if..." I then backward engineer the idea into a working method. From a performing standpoint, it would have to be an off-beat moment. Spectators often do or say very comical things. My magic always has a lot of comedy, and I find ways in my performance to catch special moments that strike me as funny, and if I'm laughing and having a good time, chances are my audience will be too.

I think what stimulates me most are words. I come up with a unique combination of words or a new take on a pun and I then try and see if it lends itself to being incorporated into a routine or whether it can become the focus of the routine. Sometimes the process will work in reverse. I will be playing with a routine and the patter line seems to emerge on its own.

I would say that for me, it is music that gets me going.

For me, it can be just about anything--a line in a song or movie, something I read, or like amagician above, I just decide I want to do, say, a linking ring routine, so I gather all the material I can on LRs, go through it and glean out what I like, adapt it and routine it.
