I personaly have very good luck with Stigmata and bending silverware. I was wondering what other people are using for mentalism. I usually do my stuff in the college Caféteria for friends and to attract the attention of a pretty girl sitting close by Smile But what are some of the hard hitting effects others are using?

I'll second that... but remember magic924 it's not always about the effects.

I get the best reactions to Alain Nu's Nu Wave, Aldo Colombini's Pre Deck Ability and Max Maven's Four-Sided Triangle. I changed the ending ever-so-slightly for Pre Deck Ability. He uses a steno pad to make the final revelation, which I don't really care for. I have four envelopes in play from the beginning of the act. I put three small dots on the bottom of the prediction in envelope No. 3, which I say means the prediction continues. Then the final revelation is pulled from the last envelope. I, too, make a drawing of the card. I like simple effects with big impact.

I liked my old remote viewing routine, and also my Dreamscape routine from 1990's... Since I retired in 1995 nobody else used it/them... I guess I'll dust them off and use them in my upcoming return to the stage...

Riley,

I'm intrigued by the title of your Dreamscape routine. Care to elaborate?

Thanks,

Bobby

Ill add.... pseudo psychometry by anneman. considered the best effect in the brancge of mentalism. Page 132 in Annemans practical mental magic. I love the book, I love the routine... man what a book!

Ok another one.. Q&A... Classic Question and answer act. I think Osterlind's version is one of the best. I do it with my own made clipboard. Brilliant

Ow both routines need showmanship and some reading.

Michiel,

I have been exploring mentalism for a couple of years now, and two things I still have not pursued, but think I must, are billets and Q&A. The billet angle I have taken care of with a recent ebook purchase, and I have Osterlind's Very Modern Mindreader. However, I just don't feel comfortable with it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bobby

p.s. As I reconsidered the heading about the hardest hitting mentalism effects, it reminded me of the fact that not a lot of people have experienced magic and mentalism live. So, effects we might not consider strong might have an incredible impact on someone with limited exposure to a practitioner of the magical and mystical arts.

I was reminded of this when I was doing some Christmas magic shows. Eddie Gardner of Diamond's Magic told me I needed to do a Santa hat tear for my seasonal shows. I picked it up, not really liking it, but trusting his judgment. For the audience, it was one of the most memorable effects. Personally, I still don't like it much, but the audience sure did, so I left it in. Worked well with children and adults. Go figure.

Sanctum 2 by Outlaw Effects.
Heirloom - Many ways to do this one.
Run of the mill ESP cards do well.
Perfect Center Tear - for that once in a while read. For girls this one realy freaks them out.
All my book tests fry at the college gigs I do. ummm I do like four that are hard hitters. MOABT and Dracula are my fav.
Did I say anything from Outlaw Effects..... Oh yes I did!!! Just go there and you will find everything they have is a winner.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

'Hardest hitting mentalism effects' hmmm? Would not that[hardest hitting aspect] take on the appearance of NO EFFECT AT ALL.

Hey,I love Outlaw, but,[IMO]they and other's are the wonderful purveyor's of MATERIAL'S that enable us to hopefully 'create' HARD HITTING MENTALIST EFFECTS.

Oh,I almost forgot...it is PW for me.

Q&A is definitely the top mentalist effect, if presented properly.

After that, I always look to the "classics:"

Book Test
Keys & Lock Test
P.K. effect
Bank Night effect (which includes all the Russian Roulette ideas)
Chair Test
Drawing Duplication
Etc.

There's multiple ways of achieving these effects, so which method you use depends on your persona and personal preferences. But there's a reason folks keep re-inventing these ideas.

You mean that the subscript (I influence you to pick this) is the same or do you actually combine effects ?
Personally I have never cared for Russian Roulette (or spike etc) type effects, but many people here seem to get a kick out of it.
For me, Bank Night, is about 1000 x more entertaining than any RR version.

The question is, how do you want to be perceived by said girl.

It's easy to learn some tricks... but you'll come over as a trickster. Tricks just aren't cool these days.

You need to decide on your 'power' and stick to it. If you want to come across as a guy with strange powers/weirdo then the pk/stigmata stuff you've already been doing will be good. Personally I'd opt for psychological style tricks. It's hard to chop and change between styles, especially in a social setting.
