Can anyone direct me to a picture / video / description of these effects? I built an illusion based in a barrel, and then come here and read it's already been done. just my luck, next I'll find out my cardboard box thing has been done too.
bob

p.s. someone already sent me a link to the cardboard box thing. back to the drawing board.

There are a couple pictures that can be found on the Abbott custom illusion page (url below)

http://www.magicgettogether.com/custom/index.htm

Also some pictures can be found in the 1997 Magic Get Together gallery of a barrell illusion being performed by the Holsteins (url below)

Hope this helps your research

Don't feel bad. I invented the Mis Made Girl Illusion when I was 13 years old only to find out I was ripped off before I was born. I think this happens alot. Go with your gut when it comes to ideas you think you have developed.

Here's a video of the barrel illusion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC4OilbhXQ0

The illusion has been around for ages! I remember seeing it over 30 years ago, as a kid.

I've lost track of how many beginners in the art think that they invented things. It's really a case of not being well informed.

Thanks to all for replying. this place is an excellent resource, comprised of the best resources - good people!

magicgettogether, thank you for the links to pics. the first is the abbotts version I believe. the second is the harbin barrel. correct me if I'm wrong please.

Alan Munro, thank you for the link to the abbots version in action.

my barrel is similar to the harbin version, but I believe it is different enough to warrant upgrading to a sale-able version.

Blair Marshall - aka "ShaZzam!" asked

my cardboard box is another sword box, though not as good as some. now where did that guy get those chickens?

gulamerian - thank you for the kindness. yes it does indeed suck to be skunked, especially by so many decades.

Swann101 - I'm too old to get angry over this. if it turned out this was already done, I'd just steal my method and use it in another effect.

again, thanks to all

So I believe the "cardboard thingee" you are describing is Hans Moretti's cardboard box penetration where he reappears with a whole barnyard of critters, including a chicken.

Here's a clip of "Barricaded Barrels" (name of effect as produced by Owen).

BARRICADED BARRELS – click here to see video Kelsey climbs into a barrel placing her hand out a hole in the side, waving. Garry then places a lid on the barrel, locking Kelsey inside. A second barrel having four solid rods placed across the opening, is examined by audience members. The barrels are then placed end to end, in a split second; Kelsey’s hand goes into the barrel coming out the other, transporting herself from one to the other through a solid door and steel rods.

You'll need to "click" the link.

I'm fairly certain the barrels used by the Carsons were made by John Gaughan, not Owens. Paul Driscoll used to have a set just like the ones used by the Carsons.

Yes, my barrels were built by Gaugan.

Chill,

Many magicians have "invented" things that were already in production without knowing it. I don't consider this "not being well-informed", because there are very few omniscient magicians when it comes to magic history (with Jim Steinmeyer and Johnny Gaughan being two of the exceptions). It does show that you are creative and I have no doubts that you will keep working and "inventing" and will end up with something great one day.

I think it was Andre Kole who challenged himself to come up with three new illusion ideas every day.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

I was surprised to see this thread and wondered who started it with my name. reading it brought back memories, thanks.

ClintonMagus, thanks for the encouragement. I've learned a lot since this one was built.
