I am currently tweaking my mall show entitled "The Incredible Inflatable Magic Show". The show is a balloon themed magic show. There is magic with balloons (eg. cut n restored balloon) and balloons around the magic.
My question is has anyone out there closed a show with Needle Through Balloon? My instinct is that it will work, but I'm not 100% sure. Creating a good closer has always been a bit of a problem for me. It took me two years to work out a strong closer for my adult stage show. If you have closed with it, did it work? Did it bomb? Did you encounter any unexpected problems? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Magically yours,

I think it's way cool, but I was never able to "sell" it to impress an audience nearly as much as it impressed me. Needs a very good routine.

I always turn it upside down. I tell them I am going to show them an illusion, that it IS NOT real. They are always amazed at how real it looks. My presentation is fun, but not really a closer.

I've never used it as a closer, but I've done it several times as an opener, and it works great.
But as a closer, I would use an extra large balloon with an extra large needle. That could work as a closer. Just invert the giant clear balloon and apply some rubber cement on the points where the needle passes. Perhaps, you could place some small balloons inside, pop them inside, use some great music building suspense, then pass the needle thru the other end. Just an idea!

Michel,
Needle Through Balloon is perfect for a show such as you describe, but I would be hesitant to use it as a closer. Maybe if it were routined in some spectacular way, but I have never seen a presentation of Needle Through Balloon that would be strong enough for me to use as a closer. Regan

I think the best balloon trick I've seen is the one using a giant balloon, the performer climbs inside it, does a short comedy routine from within the balloon(sticking his feet only out the bottom and waddling, punching the balloon from inside, etc.) Finally the balloon bursts, and the performer is wearing a completely new costume. That would be a good closer, I can't see Needle Through Balloon working myself.
Mind you, those giant balloons are bloomin' expensive - but of course, it's a show stopper. Lots of guys do the climbing in the balloon thing, but without the costume change. It's certainly very funny, though on its own, not very magical. |

I tend to agree. Balloons are my specialty, and I picture some great routine with twisting and magic or a costume change as potty mentioned or something very different to end the show. But I suppose it all depends on your routine!

It could be killer closer, if one could use balloon sword to puncture throuhg round balloon. I have thinked and pondered this many years, but never got any ideas how to real do it.
If you can figure that out, you get killer closing effect. imo. |

Of course, if it was a closer, you would have to make sure you didn't go out with a "bang"! *G* (ok, I had to say it)

Ending the needle thru balloon by having the balloon burst and a dove appear would be a fine closer.

I like to put a little bit of paper confetti inside the balloon before it's inflated. When it's being inflated, the confetti swirls around the inside of the balloon like a snow globe. When the balloon bursts after it's been penetrated and the needle has been removed, the confetti flies everywhere like a mini snowstorm. As mentioned in an earlier post, if you put the balloon in a dove tray, the confetti will provide even more coverage for the appearance of the dove.

I have used it as a closer many times, works fine. I present it as an illusion, much like the standard routine for the anderson newspaper tear. works fine as a closer.

I've had a lot of kids tell me that I put tape on the balloon in the past. So now I ask them if they'd like to learn a magic trick. I do the needle through balloon the usual way, then explain I did it with cellotape. I put the tape on the balloon and they all learn and the clever clogs are way ahead of the game at this point, then I tell them there is also a real magic way to do it. I blow up the balloon and have them examine it, I tell them to check for any cellotape on the balloon and use real magic (hypnotise the balloon, or whatever patter you use!) to let the needle go through the balloon...

I always did it as a comedy routine. Used it as a closer many times and it went over well. It is all in how you routine and present it.

I don't know if this will help you or not. I performed a routine once where I put a large sponge ball inside of a black balloon. The black balloon was blown up inside of the clear balloon. The needle penetrated the clear balloon and popped the black balloon causing the sponge ball to appear.
You could put anything inside of the black balloon. Have a card that was earlier forced inside of there, etc. Just something to think about. |

Ken, I like the confetti idea! I have done confetti in a balloon, but never in the Needled Balloon. An addition like a dove appearance at the end might be just be enough to make it strong enough to be be a closer.
Eric, I like the black balloon idea too!

Flying Magus - Mel Mellers has a fantastic needle through the balloon routine. I don't close with it, but I do perform it in many of my shows. Check it out.

Nearly Normal Suggestions...
Blow up from the middle...remove the small bubble and it turns to a ball. (No prize to first that shares the creator...) Balloon to cane. Balloon to egg... any other balloon opening or closing ideas... Harris
