Let's not forget Bill Duncan's "Tubthumping" for some great magic and scripting ideas.

Funny you should mention that, Jeff. I just was reading a friend's copy of that a few days back. Good stuff. Hope to pick up my own copy soon, i.e. after payday. . . hopefully.

Years ago Scripting seemed too much work and making my performance too rigid. Not true. My director wanted a script for the stories I told and it helped greatly to clarify, shorten and make things easier at last. It is very interesting to read Max Mavens thoughts on scripting in the book. Even if your performance does not allow for a "rigid" script, you need a skeleton of a script as Mr. Maven points out.

I've got to share this:
Before obtaining my copy of Scripting Magic, I was booked for a local-local TV appearance on a fundraising telethon. That performance was yesterday afternoon. I enjoyed it so much, mostly because I wrote a script for the segment just the way McCabe says to do it. I even had little shot diagrams to give to the camera people. One thing that happened was the producers asked me to cut my segment into two. Because of the way I had written the script, this was quite easy to do. I just did one trick before the break and then they came back to me for two more. I was nervous, but it wasn't a nervousness that I would screw up. It was a nervous-excited feeling, because this was the coolest thing I've yet done. I had no backup music, no audience helpers. It was just me and the camera, along with a few spectators in the studio. My pieces went very well. I got lots of compliments. The stage manager was surprised that I was so well prepared, and I want to say thanks to Pete McCabe for taking me to the next level of showmanship -- scripting magic. Carrie |

I just turned in my review for next months issue of MUM. Scripting Magic has joined the VERY short list of books I would recommend to ALL magicians.
What suprised me most was how many TRICKS are in this book. There's more performable material here than in most books of "tricks." |

This is a terrific book, and I agree it is surprising how many tricks were actually in the book. If you don't get better at scripting your magic after reading it, you weren't paying attention. What I found very interesting was all that was considered to be part of the script, and not just the spoken words, but pauses and gestures, etc. It is a very enjoyable read.

Hi,
Page 11 of the book Pete McCabe recommends some classic but expensive softwares for writing scripts. If you're looking for free softwares for the same purpose here are some useful links I think : RoughDraft : http://www.salsbury.f2s.com/index.htm yWRITER (a great tool to me) : http://www.spacejock.com/yWriter4.html Celtx (more than a word processor for writer it's a complete tool for organize all the stuff you may need in writing for long projects): http://www.celtx.com/overview.html
Cordially,

I am half way through reading this wonderful book, it is a nice companion to Maximum Entertainment. I am surprised that it is not getting more attention on the Café, it is a treasure trove of valuable informaton. It will inspire you to create more meaningful if not entertaining dialogues in your perfomance of magic.

Because with lack of knowledge on scripting and directing, I found that it is somehow difficult to read this book if you have not gone through Maximum Entertainment. Like the above said, this is a book as a companion for (M.E.)
All in all, both books really broaden my view in magic in terms of presentation, theory, and its meaning.

As magicians, we have at our disposal, thousands of books to teach us how to manipulate our props.
Pete McCabe's book is a rare resource that will teach you how to affect your audience. Gregg |

David Regal's script for HOTEL 52 is the BEST example of Equivoque that I have ever seen. It is genius, as is the rest of the book!

I finished "Scripting Magic" about a week ago, and I found it to be exceptionally enlightening. McCabe's POV on the benefits of scripting from the audience's perspective (i.e., script what they see, not what's actually taking place) was for me worth the price of admission. I'm certain that the impact it's already made, and will continue to make, on my magic will be significant.
