From blog "Raffaele De Ritis' Novelties and Wonders"
Frederik Ruysch (1638-71) had the ability to merge the wonders of dioramas with the horrors of the anatomic preservation: not just preserving, but deforming infant bodies affected by anomalies in artistic compositions with the science of taxydermy. Pure spectacle. In some way, he was the Ziegfield of his time. His “preparation” survived mostly in some series of prints. But some jars survives in St.Petersburg, thanks to the Tzar Peter the Great who bought them from the bizarre anatomist. See THIS and, for some larger photos, this and this |

I don't know, I don't think it is wrong... Art in some ways should be offensive.
Would I put one of these in my collection if I came across one, the answer is "yes". Brett.

Strange, but not "wrong".
Its the sort of thing you would own in your collection but keep hidden. |

It should be noted that both the Mutter and the Armed Forces Medicam Museum (legendary in my area and a staggering collection of fetuses) are teaching collections that have been opened to the public, not grudgingly but with an active welcome.
It goes right to the heart of what I've been exploring with my Ballycast podcast to consider what happens to the the transaction between collection and audience when the transaction turns from two-way (collection <> medstudents) to three-way (collection <> gawkers <> medstudents). A bit like what happens between living freaks and audience (what is different when the audience is going 'look at that weird freak' vs when the audience is going 'awesome!') |

I guess from our (Sideshow performers and curator minded) point of view this stuff is just too special. We feel as if it needs to be shared, and we celebrate places like the Mutter Museum and the Armed Forces Medicam Museum.
As artists, we would much prefer people to understand what they are seeing, but sometimes they just don't and that isn't our fault.

Yeah, true, Brett - what I mean more particularly is, what are the changes a performer can perceive (and maybe make use of) between the two reactions? Clearly it's not possible to fault an audience (or audience member) whichever way he reacts, so how do you take that difference and play with it or tweak it?
It's a bit like a painter - some people are going to look at any artwork and say "that is the most moving and profound thing I've ever seen," and some are going to say "those are pretty colors, it would go nice over my sofa if it was a little bigger," and still others are going to say "piece of garbage." Has the artist failed if he hasn't gotten through to the "garbage" viewer, or managed to move the "sofa" viewer? What is, like in something meant to be strongly confrontational like the (infamous) "P*ss Christ", meant to induce a strong reaction, the viewer merely nods his scholarly head and says "yes, very valid" and sips his chablis. Failure? Success? Worth doing? This is certainly a bit far to go to overthink a collection of oddities meant to separate a mark from a buck, but a performer who does an act like yours might figure some things out by following where the line of thought leads. Or not. |

It's been a lot of years since I've been to the AFMM, but I'm under the impression ('cuz of the giant steel girder asterisks at the base entrance) that it's no longer open to the public.

Well, I was wrong. (It happens every now and then).
The museum is still open, except on Dec. 25th and will continue to exist at a new location after the Walter Reed base--on which it is housed--is closed.

Stephon ... I just dunno, pal.
I'm a pretty cynical guy, I've rejected every call to hew to tradition or propriety, but even I would lose sleep if I ventured into a pickled-punk exhibit on Christmas day. |

There's an old adage in art: There is no 'right or wrong,' only 'good and bad.' The audience decides the 'good and bad' part.

All right, all right, so I'm a wimp...
I just can't settle with the idea (see the photos) of dressing them up in costumes or making little "floral arrangements" outa them! Gack! Or is it the "mark" in me? |
Freak Prodigy Inner circle NYC & LA 1805 Posts |
It's the mark in you.
I like that some are dressed up. And the floral arrangements...jeeze, who do I have to call to do that at my funeral?

Brett, call me about that. I have some paperwork I'll need you to sign and then we can make it happen. Of course I'll make sure that after you're preserved, everyone gets to see how wonderful you look. Do you mind traveling after you're deceased???

If you want to work something out, maybe you could post on Coffintalk , a message board for mortuary workers. Be sure and see everyone's suggestions on how to get the smell out of a van after an exhumed casket has leaked (some of these ways have to be good for cleaning up after you transport elephants or something).
Actually, these guys seem a fairly jolly lot. |
