Try to pick out a character (maybe a cartoon character.....Mickey Mouse has a high-pitched voice) and see if you can imitate it. I'm not saying to "copy" the voice exactly, but it might help you train your voice so you will be able to create a similar voice for your vent figure.
I imitate voices all the time. I was doing that long before I ever starterd doing ventriloquism. I think it helped me learn vent easier. If you are having trouble doing a high-pitched voice, maybe you could try to do something lower in pitch. Also, if you just can't seem to speak in a vent voice that is contrasting enough, you might even consider letting you figure speak with an accent. Regan

One thing is for sure...if you are not comfortable with a certain voice, then don't use it It will only strain you vocal chords and you will look uneasy during your act.
Use a voice that you find easy to use In my case...I have several puppets but I can only do four distinct voices...so I don't use them altogether in one act Some puppets/figures use the same voice but with different character and way of speaking so they do not sound exactly the same To make the puppet's voice different from yours does not mean the puppet's voice must be higher...it can be lower.... or you can talk slowly or the opposite which is talking faster than your natural way of speaking... Regan gave a great advice using accents...but I have problems with accents so I don't really do that Unless of course I do learn some accents then that will make a great improvement on my character voices too Happy New Year!!! Hi Mesmer,
I did not know it was you my friend from Indonesia Happy new year buddy I hope you can try the mask soon...use a voice that is comfortable for you...not a voice that you will find difficult to use. In case you want to try the mask soon and you don't have a voice yet...you can find a famous song in your country and do a lip sync on the mask Here's a video using the mask via Lip Sync...no ventriloquism here performed by a pal in Manila...HOWEVER, IM NOT SURE IF IT WILL FIT YOUR SHOW PERSONALITY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-pL6XLJvm8 It will still be best if you do find a voice for it...so that your routine will not be limited to lip sync

I found your Vent Voice. It's in your closet. Open the closet and try to convince it to come out. If it won't behave, close the door on it and leave it begging to come out. Go into the next room where you can barely hear it begging to be let out. These are good exercises on the way to finding your vent voice.
All this time you have not mentioned your figure. Your figure can help you find ITS voice. Every figure has a different voice and you just have to hear it in your head first. A little kid has a different voice from an old man. A crow has a differerent voice from a monkey. A good exercise is to work with two figures and let them have a conversation with one another, including you every now and then if you can get in a word edgewise.

I don't use any Vent Figure at all....I just use a Vent Mask that I put on my sepctator....so how do you find a Vent Voice if its just a half face with only the mouth & Theeth that is showing?
I also use Vent Voice as and ad lib in my routine, just like Wayne Dobson in many of his Stand Up Routine I think I try to find it in the Closet then |

In that case...the voice will still depend on the routine you do. It an be a voice for a child or a man or a woman...the mask can fit anyone actually.
It can sound grumpy...or happy...or silly/dumb It will all depend on your routine my pal in Indonesia

My routine is....since I bill my self as a Hypnotist...I will put a context of letting the inner feelings and personality comes out.....I can do this with two ways....first I can Hypnotise the Spectator or....he can stand still and do nothing while at the same time he will get the credits.....then I will put the mask on the spectator and make him sounds "Gay" and the jokes will revolve around sexism Humor and how his inner personality turns out to be Gay....any help or idea guys?....Thank you

Wow,
I just found out that our famous hypnotist artist is interested in ventriloquism! Gay people have a certain language and mannerism, so it is very good to make the differences between your voice and your spectator voice. But you still need different tone and different voice to convince the audience that it is not yours. To find another voice, you can use nasal voice, falsetto voice, grunt voice and else. But the last two are not recommended for long use in ventriloquism act. Nasal voice is almost like a voice that you make when you have a bad flu. You let some air to flow through your nose, when you talk. Then add a lot of breath to make it more girlish. Well, it is hard to write the explanation, even harder because should be in English. So if you some day can go to Bandung, I will try my best to make a demonstration for you. Salam, Budi Ha Ha |

Hi Bud,
my wife contact you few months ago in the mid of December for Birthday Party gig for my Son's 1st Birthday Party.....I know my son wouldn't understand your Pupetry but Im sure most of the invitation will surely enjoy your show...but oh well...you are fully booked! anyway......I use the Ventriloqust Act as an encore...a way to give more texture to my show....I just try to think outside the Box and do something outside the Context of Hypnotism.....BUT STILL IN-LINE with my Positioning as a Hypotist (read that again please) When Im in Bandung I will let you know...since I know your cell phone number already in the mean time....I will search the "Gay" voice in me Cheers Romy |

The creation of character and the correct use of the voice
are acting techniques that can be very successfully adopted by ventriloquists and magicians. In my forty years in theatre and entertainment, this is the very best book I’ve ever found for vocal production and flexibility, I think it would be of great help to you! ISBN: 978-0-02-041555-8, “Voice and the Actor” by Cicely Berry, Forward by Peter Brook, Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. http://www.Wiley.com, US $12.95 paperback. Best of luck! Walt |

Oh, my gosh! I'm so sorry!
I don't know that was your party, and I'm sorry because I had a tight schedule in Dec. I remember when I told your wife to call my magician friends, she said that her husband is also a magician. So I give her my storyteller friend contact number then. For quick access to video and audio source about ventriloquist in action, you can try to search in youtube.com. Use ventriloquist as the search key. You will get more than one thousand entries. The other way is buy some ventriloquist DVDs. Check the "ventriloquism..looong.." thread at the top of this section. It has a lot of good information about the source of how to learn ventriloquism in books, audios and DVDs. Salam, Budi Ha Ha |

I just talk with a Ventriloquist friend of mine from other City....He think the Illusion of life will came from the Dummy too....so if you can animate your Dummy well....then the High or Low voice that you create will complete the illusion that the Voice is came from the Dummy....so whatever Vent Voice that you make as long as it sound different with your own Voice will be felt or heard as if it comes from the Dummy....
Does anyone want to chime in on this? |
