In twisted sisters, what is the name of the count used to show all red face down cards, and all blue face down cards (It's a form of a false count, but I am not sure which one)
Thanks in Advance! |

I don't own the effect, but if I remember right it is an Elmsley or Ghost Count.

If you start with the special cards on the bottom, you can do a hammond count.

Is there really such a thing as a "Hammond" count, I thought that was a type of organ! I think you mean a Hamman count, named for Bro. John Hamman.
Besides, I think the count to use in this case (in twisted sisters, when THE card starts on the bottom) would be a Jordan count. |

Maybe it's also called the flustration count?

You are right... hamman, the same used in the gypsy curse. Oldi, Flustration is in the WEB. In this trick, it would not suffice because you have to hide face and back. |

If the special card were on the bottom, you would use a Jordan Count. This would automatically place the card third from the top.
If the card were second from the bottom, you would use a down under Elmsley (the last card counted going UNDER the packet).

Elmsley or Jordan count works. I have seen magicians that don't have very much skill not count the cards at all and still get pretty good reactions.

Counting them definitely is the icing on the cake though...
And the creamy, delicious kind of icing too. Not the disgusting plastic sugar tasting kind, LOL.

Elmsley count works best, in my experience.
The method is not the secret.

The trick can be done self working but I too prefer an underground Elmsley.

Whether you count them or not has to do with how you present this effect. I used to present this effect as a magical one so I would use an underground Elmsley to show all same backs in both packets. I would then, after the choices have been made, do two magical gestures. Once to reverse the cards, another to have them change places. Then spread the cards to show the reversed queens. This would be magical because I had just shown all to be face down earlier.
Now I do this as a mental feat. Which the state of the cards are because I made a prediction. Then I wouldn't need to do a count and in fact doing a count would defeat the purpose of a prediction. JC

Some would argue that you shouldn't even bother with a count for this effect. Depends on the subtext you wish to communicate. Showing "4 faces down" and then one turning over implies, "how'd he do that"? i.e. "he's clever with cards". Not over-handling them sells the subtext "How could he KNOW which one I'd select before hand? More of a mental thing which in my opinion plays stronger.
.... I'm currently reading Darwin Ortiz's "Strong Magic"; Subtext is a concept not widely understood by most magicians. |

Mmmmmmmmmmm. Twisted sisters! There's one I haven't performed in ages, but your post reminded me it's high time to dig out that nugget!
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

I agree with adrian. . I do a flawless elmsley count (one of the few card moves in my repertoire that I can be proud of) but choose not to in twisted sister. If you're presenting as a prediction, then the count makes it a "magic" trick. . whereas leaving that out gives the impression that it was like that all along. That can be a bit stronger sometimes.
Don't get me wrong, the trick is good either way. .just wanted to throw in my 2 cents. MS |
