Getting Inked on LA Ink.
Next week I will be getting tattooed by artist Kim Saigh on LA Ink. She will be working her creative magic on me for Kat Von D’s TLC Show. The producers have requested that I perform magic for the show. As soon as I find out when it’s going to be aired I will let everyone know. Season Two premieres January 8th. Happy New Year! |

Actually I was thinking something original like a Ying-Yang symbol… All kidding aside, I’m getting something unrelated to my profession. Being a Magician on the Show is just icing on the cake. (I am getting a Phoenix). I am considering performing a revelation type magic effect when I do perform for the show though. |

As a proud wearer of several (okay, I'm up to 8 now) tattoos, I considered this when the show originally debuted, just to meet Kat, whom I think is incredibly HOT. Then I realized that you have to pay your own way and pay for your work, too. At least they should do your tat for free, but they are some of the best in the business, too!
Good luck with it! Can't wait to see you on the show! Steve |

I do find it odd that all the guests on the TV show are not compensated and you must pay for the tattoo, which is quite expensive. No big deal – I get a great tattoo, meet some cool people and get a tiny fraction of TV exposure. |

Ah, if only I were closer, I'd be doing the same thing. I do drive 6 hours to the shop where I've had almost all my ink done, and you're probably a lot closer to Kat than I am to my favored artists.
Keep us updated! Can't wait to see it! Give Kat a kiss for me. Steve |

I got my Tattoo Wednesday afternoon and the entire event was shot for the LA Ink TV show. The cast and crew were really friendly. I was able to perform several magic tricks for the show. (I hope many of them make it after editing).
The tattoo itself took almost 4 hours in some of the most tender spots on my chest. And before anyone askes, yes – it hurt; it hurt a lot. I made it through though, and like I told one of the artists there, “You have to endure the ritual in order to wear the badge”. The Director and Producer were insistant on me perofmring magic in the show. During the interview, they had me talk about magic and being a magician more than my tattoo. I am very excited how the tattoo came out. It exceeded all of my expectations. If I need to describe it in one word, I would say “Brilliant!” I cannot show off my tattoo until after the show airs. The production staff promises to let me know 2 weeks in advance and I will pass on the news. |

Yeah, it's really not that interesting of a show (didja catch the one with Sebastian Bach?...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)...but some of the backstories do make for decent TV, as long as I get to see those incredibly sexy women on occasion. You're making me want to head to New Orleans for another ink session...and I'm on vacation this week, too! Darn ya!
Anybody else have a tat of a cell (I know of ONE other Café member who does, but MINE'S BIGGER!) from a 1943 Warner Brothers cartoon with Bugs Bunny (in a turban) sawing Daffy Duck in half in a colorful box, or is it just me? Steve |

Just an update on the LA INK show. They did the final "photo-shoot" of my healed and colorful tattoo last weekend and I am told by the producers that my episode should air in March. They also requested some of my Performance footage that I had from the Magic Castle last fall. (No doubt to edit into the back-story).
I am excited to see the outcome. Will I come off as a mysterious conjurer or a babbling nincompoop? (I hope for the former and not the later). |

Well – the Bad News and the Good News.
Apparently my appearance on LA Ink did not make the final cut. I was never contacted by post-production and the main office is now on hiatus for the season. For those of you that do not follow the show, one of the regular characters left the Tattoo Parlor on rather sudden circumstances. Aside from the interview and tattooing segments, all of my magic demonstrations had this character involved. The lives of the characters follow a particular timeline and the individual tattoo guests are edited in. Since this character has been gone for at least 3 episodes, and my footage had her involved, it looks like my 15 minutes ended up on the cutting room floor. The good news is that I got a brilliant tattoo from a top artist in the business and I made a few Hollywood contacts during the experience. Here are the results: |

Very nice. They do some excellent work on that show. I have a question about tatoos in general. Do they fade and blur with time? I have seen some on older guys and they look like smeared black blotches.
Magic is a vanishing art.

The best thing I do for myself is take care of my skin and use High sun-block if my tattoos are exposed. You can see the Gryphon on the opposite side of my chest is a tad faded and not really sharp as it originally was in 2003. |

In the summer...when my son wants to go to the pool, I have to remind him that it's HIS job to apply my sunblock. Usually takes as long to do the sunblock as we're actually there, since I now have 8 tats. All still very bright and as good as new. You can see a couple at http://www.myspace.com/stevethomasmagic

If one gets tattoos with thinner outlines and large colored spaces, then you can have the lines sharpened years from now when they eventually fade.

One thing bothers me about the experience. Going on a show and not being paid is okay, I guess. Paying for your own tattoo is okay I guess. I would be a little bothered though, since they make a huge amount of money on advertising. But the thing I have an issue with is that they "were insistant on me perofmring magic"... I would have said that I have no problem talking about magic, BUT performing for free? They have some nerve. Here's the deal: don't charge me for the ink or PAY me to perform. I feel you were dis'd. Another sign that nobody has respect for magicians. "Do a trick - for free" And what they mean by that; What we do is art and takes talent and time, you just do magic tricks. You not only gave it away for free...you paid them on top of it! Makes no scense to me. Are you that desperate to be on TV? I have a corporate event coming up in the city. Would you like to work it? I can't pay you but you can hand out your business card. Oh, and you have to pay your own way to get here, plus hotel and expenses. Oh, one more thing, it's a fund raiser $2,500 a head, you're going to have to pay that too. I need to know right away. Don't ask me how I really feel...lol |
