Unfortunately the "pearl" of time is more likely self-narrative and you might just as well expect to bump into many versions of yourself coming and going.
TL:DR: Stop signs have always been that shade of yellow/orange, why?

David Gerrold, who wrote "The Trouble With Tribbles" for Star Trek TOS, also wrote the ultimate time travel story "The Man Who Folded Himself."
"The Trouble With Tribbles" also got a time travel story in "Deep Space Nine" the crew is taking a stranded Earthman back home when he produces the Orb of Time (Apparently, there were multiple Orbs that could do different things) and highjacks the ship back to the time and place of "Tribbles." He turns out to be the Klingon agent who was disguised as a human and was supposed to poison the grain. (They actually got the same actor, btw!) Kirk catching him ruined his life and he couldn't go back to the Klingon home world, so he intends to change time by killing Kirk with a bomb in a tribble!

I'm not convinced time travel isn't happening ... I suspect the past may be dynamic and constantly changing, which would explain why nobody can agree on what happened.
Google "mandala effect" ... dynamic past, the most logical explanation: We keep living our lives over and over and over again, usually doing the same exact thing ..... but every once in a while, somebody does something different. All the people alive remember what had happened, while the next wave of people remember the new event. Hmmm..... -JoeJoe

You notice the "mandela effect" always seems to happen to people who have been out of the loop for quite a while?
I rather believe we've forgotten the person was around and when they die, think it had happened a long time ago.

The Mandela Effect gets stronger when online searches offer images showing things as recalled.
Caleb Carr wrote a story, "killing time", featuring the problem of evidence.

It should be noted that it was a 1976 movie--not to be confused with another movie with the same title from 1964 starring Preston Foster. I found the one from 1964 to be the more interesting simply because of the shock ending which had a so-called time Loop or time trap, in which the time travelers would have to endlessly repeat the same experience for all eternity. Wouldn't that be the ultimate nightmare!?! |

I'd save the lives of some people I know who died too soon.
Selfish, I know, but the world would be a better place with them. I'd get waaaaay more involved in environmental issues and elections. -Mary Mowder |

As I saw it, they went too far back and overlapped with themselves at the moment in the experiment when the time portal had reached 100,000 years into the future. Stuck at a different time rate than reality (the older them were moving so slowly as to be almost imperceptible) they decided the only escape was to enter the time portal and see when the world would look like in 100,000 years. (Turns out, a lot like Griffith Park ) Then the film restarts and their PAST selves do all the things they did the first time. I just watched that film on the new "Mystery Science Theater 3000" available on Netflix. They actually cut out the last few seconds, ending the film with the heroes appearing in the park like future. Maybe an editor somewhere got confused and made a change. The WEIRD thing about the film is when they're in the apocalyptic future, magic tricks are used to demonstrate "future" technology! A worker, creates square frames from round rings, a "teleporter" is clearly a stage illusion and Robert-Houdin's "orange tree" illusion is used as an example of accelerated growth. Mentioning "Weird," the people who gave us "Tales From The Crypt" tried to do a pilot for a series based on EC Comic's "Weird Science." (This is not to be confused with the movie "Weird Science" involving the manufactured girl who could manipulate reality, or the "I Dream of Jeanie" type series developed from it.) This was a bizarre think tank called "W.E.I.R.D." run by Robert Enguland one of the sub-plots of which was a guy who hits something with his car, travels back in time a couple of hours to avoid being arrested for robbery and (you guessed it) is standing in the wrong place at (literally) the wrong time and gets run over by himself!

The movie was called "W.E.I.R.D. World" and I must be wrong about Enguland being in it because he doesn't show up in the credits!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114881/ Apparently, this thing has dropped off the radar and no one can find a copy.

I doubt time travel will ever be possible. If it ever could become possible then they'd already be here - and would always have been here. Think of it like the Fermi paradox but for DrWho rather than aliens

Unless you presume to know/tell all, there is no "too far" or "overlap", but instead a discontinuity of information, matter and energy. You open the magic door, information flows both ways. News gets around. In Doctor Who it's become a running gag. What giant robot and where do all the salvaged alien items go?
Virtual worlds have reset/save/restore points. Unless someone finds a reliable distance formula for stabile connections ...which open/close/move at much less than the speed of light - awkward escalators.

The premise and climax of Philip K. Dick's short story "Paycheck" come to mind. The time portal opens and a mechanical arm reaches out to take the evidence...
That was the 1950s.

Wasn't there a story (can't recall title or author) about a guy who goes back in time, gets a gal pregnant, and then it turns out that the resulting child is himself (such that he was actually his own father)?
