I do. I'm an ICT Secondary School teacher during the day, but as soon as the school and children found out I'm a pro magician at nights and weekends, they got me performing at the end of each lesson, and running an after school club teaching magic.
I also spent the summer in America, teaching magic at a Summer camp for 11-16 year olds. How can I help? Steve |

I am exploring ways of how to fill up my weekdays. I have taught magic in the past, but not connected to schools.
Currently I am working with a fundraising company doing school shows, and do promo magic in bars for various products, and of course, BD parties. I was looking for how to approach a school about teaching after-school activities, or during class as an elective. |

First, to work in a school you need the right clearance. The only reason I'm teaching is to get my qualified teachers status, which takes two years.
Once I have that, then schools can hire me, and pay me as a 'supply teacher', which means its easier for them, and easier for me. You don't have to be QTS qualified to work this way, but you hardly get any work without it, especially here in Britain, where all entertainers have to be hired through the government and require permission slips from the local LEA. Its a nightmare job to get paid without, and if you want constant regular work, you need to be qualified. For the majority of schools, they won't hire anyone unless its Christmas, due to legality and costs problems. At Christmas, they pay via petty cash, but they can't afford to do that throughout the year - that's why I'll be going through the books as a supply teacher. Schools do occasionally get entertainers and story-tellers in during the year, but they are sent to the school, and hired BY the LEA. Usually a group of schools are contacted and they send a bunch of entertainers to them, on a circuit. This can be a profitable venture, but you have to get your name on the LEA books. They also have to be educational shows. The entretainers I have spoke to who do this; travel a long way to the area, and book out a hotel for a week while they do a different school each day. They make £150.00 (GB) per day. There are lots of schools, but not all of them are on the list as different governing bodies own different schools (religious usually). But it takes up a whole week when there working. I'm not sure how much they work though. After hotel costs and petrol to get there, I'm not sure how much they really made in the end. You might want to think about opening a magic Saturday school. Find a local den or scout hut and run classes for the children. 4-9 year old in the morning. 10-16 years in the afternoon. You can advertise at school and get the children there, but making money from it, that's questionable on how much. Also, you'll be leaving out regular shows. LEA = Local Education Authority Magic Santa - I take it you disapprove of something? Is it teaching magic? Because getting children off the streets and away from being hurt and bullied outside is the key goal here. Getting them interested in magic improves there hand / eye skills, creativity, social network and gets them off the street and off the computer. Magic is suppose to entertain, children especially, If you can't handle that, then your in the wrong business. How old were you when you started learning magic? Do you really want to deprive another child of the same joy? These clubs are for the children that WANT to learn. There is no blat-en exposure, and children aren't being forced to attend like other classes. Your teaching magic to those that want to learn. Steve |

I don't have a problem with teaching kids how to perform magic. I have a problem with an open class where out of 30 kids who sign up 20 just want to know HOW magic is done to know how, that equates to exposure to me. Of the ten left over three think it is a class on learning to play the card game Magic, four will think it is stupid because it isn't magic it is just tricks, three will kind it interesting, one will make an effort to really learn some magic.
I was going to point out that you said you had a club, that is different that what I'm reading the pirate wants to do. He wants to go into a school, toss up signs that say something like "Learn how to do magic tricks!", of course he'll now deny all that. Magic is based on secrets and I only teach those that have shown an sincere interest in learning magic and have made an effort to learn it. A lot of kids will take what is handed them, it is the ones that want to go out of their way to learn that should be shown. Just to have a class to expose magic to anyone who walks in? Sorry, I'm against it. Teach balloons, teach puppetry, teach fly fishing, teach back gammon (I learned in a class), teach chess. I often wonder about people who come here, and it is farely often, who say "I want to teach everyone at a Summer Camp how to do magic!". To what end? Ever notice that there are pro magicians out there or name magicians who do material and they don't teach even other magicians how it is done? That is because they have a better understanding than many others. Now if this pirate fellow has, for some reason, a group of kids who are interested in learning the art of magic rather than how magic is done and he wants to start a club for them more power to him, that way the three kids who want to learn do and the rest be ***ed. |

In a certain way I am with Santa here - why magic? Why not juggling, growing plants (food), more practical uses of a computer (letters, database, publishing programmes) and lots more, I'm sure.
Why magic, considering the majority of children (and adults) just want to know how it is done? Dave

You are right I would deny it MS . . . I want to put up big signs saying "Learn How Magic is Done - Everything Exposed by the Masked Pirate!" LMAO! That is what YouTube is for - quicker, easier, cheaper.
Sure, there will be some who just want to know how something is done. They will quickly get bored when they discover they have to practice, and they actually learn very little for the amount of work they have to put in each routine. A few will really get into it, and learn on their own. Santa, I am not too worried about exposure, we are talking kids, and a low budget, so your dove pan secret is safe. I think it is a great way to learn to be confident, public speaking, and a positive way to get attention. It keeps kids off the streets, and gives a few a profession. It also could help fill my weekdays. As for teaching classes on a Saturday, it does not generate the amount of cash I need to support my family. I HAVE to make a grand on a Saturday to keep a float. |

I teach magic and have for the past 15 years now and would not change it for the world. However there is a difference in the way I approach it and the way I have set it up and structured. I am the co-leader of the Society of Young Magicians assembly 96 out of Philadelphia. The SYM (for those not knowing) is the official and credited youth program of the Society of American Magicians with assemblies around the world.
It is my goal to not just perform and teach magic to those really not into it or those who come just to goof off. Our assembly teaches kids ages 7-17 the ART of magic and we do not settle for anything less then those kids who have a direct passion and desire to learn and to accept the way we teach and what our assembly is about. If we see a child there that does not belong there or that is there for the wrong reasons, they simply are not asked back. It is as simple as that. We are a comitted group of parents, members and adult leaders with a goal of teaching kids magic the right way and giving them the power to empower themselves. I have been doing this both locally and nationally for over 15 years and have never once gotten a single penny for doing so. I would never want to get paid for teaching magic to kids. After all, they are the future of magic and it is my way of giving back to magic what it has given to me. I want to put magic in the proper hands with those youth who I feel have the desire to take it places. I only wish when I was younger, there was someone or some club who could teach me magic in a structured way for those who really wanted to learn and those who had a passion to stick with it and do it right. I have no problem with anyone teaching a magic class or wanting to do so. My only hope is that you set your own ground rules and that you make sure the kids take it as seriously as you do. To just take money from kids who really should not even be there to me is just not worth it. So set ground rules for yourself and make sure that the children learn magic the proper way. Teach them not just the tricks but the fact that magic is about entertaining people and not so much fooling them. Just my 2 cents worth is all. Kyle

Hi Captain:
The late Brian Flora had a video and audio tape on teaching magic classes to schools - mainly, after-school programs and continuing education classes. The tapes were made at least 15 years ago, but much of the information is still relevent. I really like Brian's whole philosophy and approach. I believe you can still get the tapes from his widow, Jan, at http://www.floraco.com Ron |

If you are intersted, you can also gain a lot of information from the SAM itself through the SYM program as well. There has been a lot of information developed for programs of teaching and teaching aids for magic for usage in the SYM programs worldwide.I might be worth looking into for additional information.
I can also help and give you advice if you wouldblike it. Just ask.bHaving done this for 15 years I have begun to know what works and what does not and what types of things you can do to angage the kids and empower them early on. My pleasure to do so. Kyle

Juggling, now that is cool. I wish I could juggle. I had a guy tell me once that he could teach anyone to juggle....he failed. |

I will look into the Brian Flora's tape. I have a couple of his somewhere . . .
Kyle, I'll be contacting you later if that is ok. No, I have no desire to be a babysitter, so if they aren't interested in the art, I won't be interested in them. It doesn't pay enough to put up with kids who would rather be, or should be, someplace else. I am sure it will go into balloons, juggling and vent work too. It would be nice to have the kids put on a show in the end . . . |

I am a kid (17 yrs old.) I do magic professionally now and am able to because I was born into a magician family. I have thought about doing this as well. My thoughts are there are a lot of tricks out there that are already exposed that you can teach, but emphasis patter and routine structure. That way the kids that get bored from actually having to practice don't learn any easy-to-blab secrets and the kids that will go on to perform for family and friends will have a wonderful base education in performance.
By the way, balloon art is one of my main passions. The different twists and techniques are just as much secrets as TT and double lifts and any other sleights you are afraid of exposing. Alexa |

I've done magic classes, not a great deal of money, teaching basic effects from children's magic books ( they can't work out the instructions and parents can't be bothered ) no entertainer would dream of performing them, but giving the kids loads of conference to perform, only the ones with interest will stay after the first five minutes when you won't tell them how to float.
BUT GUESS WHO THEY WANT TO ENTERTAIN AT THERE PARTIES/EVENTS? |

Steve has covered this excellently. Let me just ad one other detail.
Check out the libraries the children would use. See what is in there. there are always some basic primer books on magic. Go for that level of effect to teach. then refer them back to library to find more of the same standard. You're not divulging anything that hasn't been in the public domain for decades. And, this important, everything there is likely to be achievable. Achievable to understand, make and perform. Most people will fall by the wayside but it only takes the occasional one. The business only needs the occasional one!
