Derren Brown I think has 2 performance dvds. Class stuff...

Mr. Hickok:
When are you lecturing? Where? I just read Mentalism 101, great book. I hope to see your lecture or at least get the DVD when (if) you release it.

As far as acts are concerned, I'm aware that there are acts published (in a book, not on dvd), by Banachek, James Biss (DVD also available) and Chuck Hickok.
A british fellow who plays the role of "Kockov" also has a complete act on DVD. I just hope you all have the good sense to learn from those people, but NOT to copy them. Or else you will fail miserably, but you already knew that, right ? |

Incidentally, I would have thought it more useful to see a full performance from a single shot. At least from the perspective of learning.

^No they are not on dvd, so I guess someone got a little off topic. But if you can get 'em, do, good stuff, but I'm sure you have 'em anyhow!

If you check ebay, you can occasionally buy dvds of TV performances by Marc Salem, Craig Karges and Gary Kurtz. The Kurtz performance is in French. I don't understand a word--but it's one of the finest acts I've ever seen.

Thanks for your endorsements guys...
Just an update for your interest. We're just finishing up this week my new "MIND BLOWING" DVD. Just have to hammer out the menu and graphics work but all of the post production stuff is now complete. Our goal is to have the product ready for some lectures I'm doing in Canada in February. The plan is to include it with my new book of the same name, which, crossing my fingers, should be out by March. Not sure if and when the DVD will be available as a seperate item but feel free to PM me to get a personal copy of the disk only. Further to this thread, you'll be pleased to know that this new DVD contains TWO live performances - not a studio audience in the L&L tradition. The audiences are real and so are the challenges, successes and errors on my part. One is in a comedy club with about 200 people (the famous "Second City" in Toronto) and the other is with a larger, younger, tougher crowd in a big night club. The second is also a bit more naughty (R ish) as the show was marketed as "Dirty Minds" instead of my ususal "Mind Blowing". I know you'll find this highly amusing. We used multiple cameras for the shoot and the quality is quite good. I'm quite happy with the footage. I'm especially happy as we're including a "voice over" commentary option, like a Director's commentary on a commercial DVD. I REALLY liked this feature on Max Maven's NOTHING DVD and thought it was the best part of it, frankly. In the same way, you'll be able to listen to my thoughts and what I'm struggling to make happen, successfully or un, as you rewatch the performance. I'm very excited about this feature on this new DVD and I hope it will become much more common place with everyone's disks in the future. (There is of course, a traditional, Explanation segment as we've all come to expect...but even there, I've done things a bit differently, as I enjoy doing. The explanation of the effects from the first show are filmed just before the taping of the SECOND show a week or so later, so I'm resetting in real time in front of the camera, just before going on. And I'm refering to things I'm going to try doing differently...and you get to see the result.) It's cool stuff and I think you'll like this little project... Cheers, James

FYI...just an update...
There's two authorized samples of the new DVD available on-line for a sneek peek at: http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dll?......tegory0= They're numbered and laser inscribed right on the disc. One (#1)comes with a whole package of extras and the other (#3) is just the DVD itself. Either way, I think we've come up with a really innovative way of doing DVDs...right. I'm actually looking forward to those reviews... ;>) Feel free to PM me with questions or here. Best to all, James

I had the chance to view part of the upcoming DVD that will be available in March as a companion to the book from James Biss called MIND BLOWING.
The dvd (but not the book ) was available recently on Ebay directly from James Biss as a kind of prerelease promotion. The idea , as I understand it , is to have a full mentalism act on a dvd to illustrate the routines explained in the book that will come with it.You will see James Biss doing the full act twice for 2 different audiences with REAL PEOPLE in a comedy club in Toronto (Canada). Here is what Mr Biss Wrote about the dvd here on the Magic Café on Jan 28 : ''Just an update for your interest. Cheers, James''****************************************8 MY COMMENTS : This is a very entertaining dvd.Mr Biss is really dynamic and funny. This is a real professionnal in action in the real word for real people. It this the kind of stuff I wanted to see and learn from.Too many mentalism dvds were shot in front of a studio audience. You see here the real thing .And you will learn only from watching the show. But there is more. You see the 2 performances and you can watch it again with commentary in real time like in the Nothing dvd set from Mr Max Maven. The comments give you the little details that could make the difference between a good or abad presentation.Because it is all about presentation . You will see routines ( explained in the upcoming book) like : -Psycho Tattoo : divination by the audience of a tattoo on a women's skin on stage. It is based on a simple psychological force. The presentation is very interesting made just to open the show. -TAKING PICTURES :you reproduce many drawings made by members of the audience placed in large enveloppes. It uses special enveloppes that look very normal , I think , based on a well known principle .Really nice routine involving the audience participation. -ESP mindset : This is the one I prefer. Really good.Really entertaining and easy to do as I could figure. You have 5 chairs on stage numbered from 1 to 5. Five members of the audience take place on the chair they want. They choose one of the five ESP symbols .You correctly guess their choice. As a kicker they are all seated on the chair showing the symbol they choosed. Really good mentalism routine.Kind of chair prediction mixed with ESP matching test. -DATING GAME : this one is also really great stuff.Three spectators on stage will guess the cell phone number of a fourth one also on stage. You will guess the last digit yourself and make the call right away. I am really looking forward to the book and dvd release somewhere in March as stated by Mr Biss here on the Magic Café. |

Thanks for the feedback JL!
It looks like the book and DVD will now be out in April at your favourite retailer and the target cost is $89 - but that's still to be determined by all the powers that be. The book will be a bit thicker than the Extremely Mental Edition of Messing With Minds (out of print), and will be the handmade cloth padded hardcover like before. The DVD will be included with it and there are no particular plans by Murphy's or me to do the DVD as a seperate item. We'll have to see. We shot the DVD as a companion to the book...just to show the material in actual performance in front of real live (difficult and/or drunken muggles). (I'm glad you liked the Director's Commentary feature JL - we call it "Insights" and I think it's way cool. Thanks Max!) I'll try to keep you posted on our progress... If you can't wait (and still want to pick up one of the last MWM:EME which have been selling at pretty astonishing prices on eBay) feel free to check out: http://collectibles.listings.ebay.com/Ma......ItemList All the best, James

I was one of the lucky 10 bidders for the pre-release DVD of 'Mind Blowing' and thought it was worth every penny - it would have been all to easy to have edited down the material in order to infer a more fluid and hitch-free set of presentations - the fact that James gives the viewer a 'warts and all' insight into the shows was both courageous and a testament to his commitment to the project.
While some of the routines would not suit my persona and approach, the DVD was full of workable material and more importantly (from my perspective) James shows himself to be a great example of a reflective perfomer who has thought through every angle of his performance and the audience's reception of his work. I will be very interested to see the book when it goes to press but until then, I can only offer my enthusiastic endorsment of the project - the way he retains his composure in the face of a ruthless act of front row heckling in one of the shows is reason enough to sing James' praises! I only wish more professionals would be as generous with their performance footage - it was a real education to watch and has given me much to think about in my own work. Thank you James Biss! |
