Lawrence Hass to Lecture at IBM Ring 50, Wednesday, February 6th

Lawrence Hass is an extremely accomplished magician and is a philosophy professor at Muhlenberg College with a passionate commitment to the art of magic. This distinctive combination has given rise to a series of activities, projects, and programs that celebrates the intelligence of the magical arts and brings them to a wider audience. He has performed his astonishing, artful magic in venues from Las Vegas to the East Coast, both on the stage and close up. Jeff McBride said, “What you are doing will be talked about for decades”. Larry's essays on magic performance and theory have been published in leading magic magazines, including MAGIC, The Linking Ring, M-U-M, and Hokus Pokus (Switzerland). In 1997 he received a "Special Merit Award" for the essay "The Illusion of Technique" from The Linking Ring. In 2001 Larry received the prestigious Howard Bamman Trophy from The Linking Ring. He has recently completed his first, full-length book for magicians, “Transformations: Creating Magic Out of Tricks”. His book is listed in the top ten best selling books in Genii magazine.

But his lecture isn’t really about the tricks. "It's to learn how to make magic out of a trick. Tricks are easy to come by," he said. "Magic is deceptive, powerful, entertaining, and perhaps -- this is the Holy Grail -- perhaps even artistic." Hass covers craft as well as philosophy, including a magician's need to control the attention of the audience.

The lecture is free to members of IBM Ring 50. Other interested Magicians may attend for a $10 fee.
