"Underground" seems to be the new "alternative". "Alternative" when applied to music simply meant loud (set to 11, man), poorly-played, navel-gazing, flannel-wearing whining. "Underground" is just like that but with mentalism and magic. Hmmm, somedays maybe I should just stay in bed.

Dale you are busting my gut. GREAT post.
I do remember the 'Underground' designation though as used for groups like Beatnics etc. And 'underground' Newspapers like the Berkley Barb etc. I would also think that a 'muggles' population would look at a 'Wizard like' group as holding secret and 'underground' information they are not privy to. I'll stick with my 'Top Secret' though...I actually held a Top Secret Crypto designation from the US Govt. so I'm legal. haha I can have a Top Secret Crypto Clearence! Great stuff though Dale...love your word smithyness.

Well, guys, I have not been in this great art for very long, just about a year so, it is sometimes hard for me to figure out what is hype and what is not. that's why I joined this forum, to ask questions and read reviews from knowledge people like you guys.
Have I been duped into the hype, I am sure. When I read great reviews on a book/DVD or product, I do a little research and buy it. If the person reviewing is intentionally hyping a product for financial gain, well I guess they may get me to buy. I am hoping that I am a little more careful and smater in my purchases than when I started a year ago. I did get on the list for the Chadwick book and have paid for it! Hype or not, that is the question Thanks for all your comments and reviews. Omar (The CiscoKid) |

Hype can also be a lot fun for those in the know...as in Sideshow...PT Barnum...Movie Posters...hell we wouldn't see a single movie ever if it wasn't for the hype! Flat out LYING though is another thing. For example, I can hype the hell out of the book 'Circus Of The Scars' by Jan T Gregor...I could not say enough BIG outrageous words about it...but I believe in those words as it WAS the best show biz (or otherwise) book I ever read not to mention it is ABOUT hype pretty much. My hyping THAT book is a favor to the potential reader me thinks.
Now if I was to hype a movie, say like Rush Hour 3...I would deserve a punch in the mouth. Hype is not always Hype if it's well intentioned Hype...?

The real problem is that nowadays ANYONE can write an e-book and sell it on the Café. And that is pretty much what is happening. The majority of the "new" stuff is crap rehashed ideas way over priced....
A few years ago there were some good and innovative releases. But now everyman and his dog thinks they can cash in on this. And in many cases it appears they can. I wouldn't buy anything new unless it was exceptional. I can't remember the last time I saw anything that comes close to that being touted on here. The Café has become a garabage dump for dodgy wannabe dealers. The quality of the posts and threads have really decended into the mental abyss. |

What have you bought recently that you thought was so bad?

My dog liked my e-book.
It also got a few really good reviews outside the Café. Personally, I've seen some great material come through here in addition to some of what Mindpunisher points to. To be fair, I’ve seen much commercially released material that follows along with this same model. What has been stated is a commentary on the entire industry, not just what goes on here. Tony |

But that's the problem these days there is so much **** that if there is any good material it gets lost.
And Ive bought a couple of items one that was raved about on here and in actual fact is crap. Im not gonna mention it because there will be a back lash. However the number of people who have agreed with me privately and offline confirms my opinion. Great review but really crap item. |

Great review but really crap item. To quote Hillary, "That makes me sad,,,but I will try to go on." That has been the nature of the industry (and many others) since it began. Tony |

I suppose my point is this: What good does it do to make a general statement about products being crap? If you would name specific products that you felt were sus-standard, then at least it would be a service to those wanting input about that product. To just gripe about the state of what's being marketed in a general way really doesn't do anyone much good.
If you'd tell us what, specifically you think is crap and why you think so, it might start some meaningful discussion. - entity

You may not change the nature of the industry but you can change your part in it.
If an item is good it should need no hype. The ads for some mentalism products would find themselves in trouble if they were in the mainstream world. Ocasionally a few products live up to or even beyond the hype. But they are very few and far between these days. |

Again, just generalities.
Being specific would lend some meaning to your posts. - entity

I have always posted my true feelings about products do a search to find them. Im not going to get into a frenzy over that. Im only complaining about the hype.on this occasion. I notice you have released an e-book? I don't see you plastering it all over the forum. You did the right thing you put up a banner ad. Many of the hyped ads are almost blatant lies. |

I'm a bit sensitive after being accused of "Hyping" the Chadwick book. I don't hype. I recommended the Chadwick book because I read the original manuscript and use the material and I think it is very good.
I'd agree that some posts abuse the privilege, but I don't know if there's any way around that, apart from complaining to the powers that be here and asking them to remove such posts when it becomes too much for you. - entity

Well, I can only speak for myself. I tried not to hype what I put out, purchased an ad, and offered to refund the purchase of anyone unhappy with it. There were no presales allowed for it either.
I did refund the one person who said it was unusable for him. Additionally, when asked by potential buyers if my product would work where I felt it was not effective, I told the potential buyer that. The only real complaint I received from those in the industry was that it was under-priced. And as I sad before, my dog likes it. BTW: My ad was taken down this month so I will not mention the product by name or accept any inquiries for it. Tony |

Mariagi: Why play games, then? Tell us under what names those sentiments were posted, and where, so that we can all take a look.
I post as entity, but everyone here knows my real name. If I were to trash a product publicly, I'd have the courage to use my real name, if I wanted to be taken seriously. - entity
