I don't want to revive the old thread below, but:

I'll be in Tampa with the family January 19-21 and Orlando January 22-25 - if we can find time, we might like to take in a good family-oriented magic show. Any suggestions?

It's not clear from the website . . . do you have to buy WonderWorks admission to go to the Outta Control Magic Show?

It's not in Orlando, but we start a 17 day run at the South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach. The venue is an incredible black box theatre in the exposition hall.

We do three shows daily, including Kristen Johnson's Full View Water Torture Cell. The show is free with fair admission. The dates are January 17-February 3.

Definitely hit West Palm. Kevin & Kristen do an outstanding show. And their new piece - ooooh boy is it big.

Hey Robert, great seeing you and Sara over the weekend!

Article in today's newspaper about Kristen & myself. We are down in West Palm Beach, FL for three weeks, performing at South Florida Fair. She is doing her Full View Water Torture Cell along with other illusions and we unveiled our Jet Turbine illusion.

Hope you enjoy,
Kevin

This couple can't escape big crowds at the fair
By CHARLES PASSY

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

It's one thing to hold your breath under water for a couple of minutes.

It's another to do it while shackled inside a tube about the width of a small closet, picking through lock after lock before you can finally escape.

But that's what escape artist Kristen Johnson does at the South Florida Fair up to three times a day.

"It's a controlled risk," said Johnson of her signature water-torture escape, a stunt made famous by Harry Houdini decades ago.

But Houdini performed the feat behind a curtain, leaving some to question how he did it.

Not Johnson: She does it in full view of the audience.

It's all part of the half-hour show that Johnson and husband and fellow escape artist Kevin Ridgeway have been staging for standing-room-only crowds at the fair since opening day. A typical performance will also include everything from a straitjacket escape by Ridgeway to another seemingly death-defying routine involving Johnson and a whirring jet turbine.

This is the second straight year the Indianapolis and Phoenix-based couple has appeared at the Palm Beach County event, one of dozens of festivals, expo and theaters they play as part of a 10-month touring schedule.

Complete career changes

Not bad for a couple that just a decade ago wasn't even in the escape biz.

True, Johnson came somewhat naturally to the art, since her mother ran a small agency that booked magicians. But Johnson worked for a Fortune 500 company. It was only when her mother became ill and she took over the business that Johnson started to see her own potential to charm audiences through magic and, later, escapology.

Meanwhile, Ridgeway, who met Johnson in 1997, got hooked on magic through her. The couple eventually became husband-and-wife and onstage partners.

Ridgeway said they wanted to take the traditional touring magic/escape show and make it larger-than-life. Plus, the couple liked the idea of introducing a youthful edginess to the production.

"Everything today is extreme sports," Ridgeway said.

Still, you can't take things to the extreme without an element of danger. So far, Johnson has failed to execute the water-torture escape on only one occasion - when she blacked out in mid-performance and Ridgeway had to assist her.

But Ridgeway admits that he never knows what the next performance will bring. And it's why he carefully times the escape.

"Once she starts hitting three minutes, it gets a little intense," he said.

Kevin,

Looks great. You and Kristen do an amazing job. Congrats on the article too! Just goes to show that working for free CAN get you publicity. *cough*

See you around.

Thanks Robert...yeah I heard there were some performers working free at the fair. Not really sure why or how...but to each his own. Plenty of work out there as far as I can tell.
