Hey guys,
I was wondering if you guys could help me out with some learning materials that involve using a coin shell...i'm looking to get more in depth with my coin magic... I'm good and all but all I own in a quarter shell and that's not too visual if you know what I mean... plus I have bigger hands so I'm "upgrading" to dollars... I've worked with half dollars and those are too small... anyways, if you guys could help with some ideas for me that would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you Fastmagic |

Some of David Roths dvds use the odd shell in them, plus I would say get the dvds if you haven't already as you will find material in there that you would use...don't just work with gaffs ..sleights are a must if you are serious with coins.
Roth,David-Expert Coin Magic Made Easy!-'Coin in Bottle' Coin & Special Gaffs .. Stars Of Magic #8 (David Roth) and vol 9... any of the David Roth dvds are worth getting ,these are only a couple I have listed.
If you put the time in....you will achieve ...

Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" and the "New Modern Coin Magic" have lots of great material on shell work.

I do a lot of sleights already, I actually don't use gaffs right now, all my coin magic is sleights. I was just thinking of incorporating some shell stuff in my work because it can be VERY visual while looking more simple than some sleights. I'm not a huge fan on the "coin in bottle" trick, I my opinion, "prohibition" my blacks magic is a lot more stunning.
any more ideas? I would LOVE to have them! thanks for your replies |

Hi Fastmagic,
Don't discount your quarter shell! You have in your arsenal something that will allow you to do miracles with borrowed money, something that you cannot do with half dollars, morgan silver dollars or chinese coins. Don't get me wrong, I use the larger coins myself, however, when you are out and about and want to do some killer "reputation maker" effects, borrowing some quarters and then doing some seemingly impromptu versions of shell routines (i.e.: Roths Shelled Coins Across, etc.) will fry people. There is something about doing magic with an object that is lent to you that increases the whole magic mojo. If you've ever seen Garrett Thomas do his Imagination Coins routine with quarters, you will understand what I mean. I bought an Ultimate quarter shell just for such a purpose. Douglas M. |

Hi Fingers,
I didn't see quarter shells offered from the two uber gaffers that I usually order from, so I did a search. I found something called the Ultimate Quarter Shell by none other that good ole Johnsons Products on Hank Lee's Magic Factory site. The shell is expanded but has minimum distortion and deep sides. I bought it after seeing Garrett Thomas do his Imagination Coins routine at a lecture. This has to be the most well thought-out and motivated presentation for a coins across I have ever seen. Audiences love it and the theme of the power of the spectators imagination doing the magic moves everything along. It's a variant of the Roth shelled coins across, but the rote repetition of Roth's routine is broken up by having the spectator imagine the coins are doing different things... Borrowing the coins first simply bumps it up another notch. Douglas M. |

What's the date on that Hofzinger book you just got Jonathan? I've heard that his reference was the earliest and he is rumored to have been the first person to make a shell as we know it today. I don't know the validity of any of this, since I've never seen the book and have only heard third hand.
One of the items in the section Jonathan mentioned, in "More Magic", is called "The Eight Coins and Two Brass Covers". So far in my research, this is the precursor to all of the upturned glass, coins through table or coins across effects. In 1907 David Abbot submited his handling of it using two brass napkin rings to the Sphinx. This added an extra visible impossiblity to the routine. I've tried this and people just stare with their mouths open. It's good to see how it started because it can really get you thinking. Modern Magic is available through Lybrary.com for only $6.50: http://www.lybrary.com/more-magic-p-122.html You can apply to become a member of the Learned Pig and can to read it for free: http://www.thelearnedpig.com.pa/ Sphinx is also available through Lybrary.com, but I would only recommend it to people that are willing to sift through 1000's of pages. Happy hunting. PS...Another great thing about More Magic is that you get the first references to the Bobo Switch and pulling coins from or pushing coins into the elbow. |

The Hofzinser item, as documented in Hatch's book, appears to date from letters sent back and forth in 1847 to Pospishil. Not sure this qualifies as an expanded gaff as the inserted item was intended to be of a noticeably different character.
