What kind of presentation do you do for this...what kind of story?

I keep imagining telling a tale of a kid who brings in his shoelaces for show and tell - holding up three uneven lengths (add the aglets) and explaining that he got these at the shoe store with his sneakers but they don't work right. The humor which has to stay unstated is that the laces are way too big and for some reason he has three.

Hmm I finally have something to contribute I use professor's nightmare for kids shows all the time and the story I weave goes something along the lines of 3 friends who are walking down the beach and the big one trips over a magic lamp..genie comes out..3 wishes blah blah...the short friend wants to be taller & the tall one wants to be shorter..blam they're all the same size but no one could recognize them anymore..so they get their wishes reversed and now they're back to the way they were..moral of the story is to be happy with yourself!
Plays very well with kids and the parents always love the positive message! |

I've used what others have used: a hypnotic theme in which I tell the audience that I've hypnotized them into believing they are seeing things that are not possible.

Bill abbott has a great routine I believe is called three bears. I personally use a routine similar to Paul Greens Rope routine on In the Trenches. I like how it starts with one single piece of work and eventually ending up with the three. I never really liked bringing out the three pieces as a stand alone. I would highly recommend checking out his dvd.

I went out to a bar the other night and met this group of beautiful women....a short one, one my height and a tall one....well after some good time, and a few cocktails too many they all started to look the same height...obviously I was a little razzy...My buzz eventually wore up and sure enough my eyes were decieving me one of them was short, the other my height, and the last was tall...and the worst part of it is, I went home with none of them

Derek Hughes has a great presentation of Insomnia here ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uFuG05rgoQ&feature=related I talk abuot working in a hardware store in the "miscellaneous section" I would have to weigh out a pound of nails for people, clean up spare cork, and cut clotheline for customers. Some people want their line to be a clean cut on both sides, and as my arts and craft skills leave a lot to be desired, there would always be rope lying around....Then I go into it... |

Derek's a talented entertainer. Loved that video.
I ran across a Silly Billy column on the PN, with several very good presentation and routining ideas, found at http://sillymagic.com/professor.htm

I have had really good luck with telling a basketball story as my presentation for PNM. I introduce the players, guard, forward and center. Once the game states they start moving up and down the court so quickly that I can't tell which player is which, in fact they all look the same. Story ends when the game is over as the players slowly shake hands and change back to their original size.
Has played very well for all audiences. For kids under five years old I tell as story about going to the dog shelter to buy a dog, big, medium and small. Have a nice day, Walking Bob in Iowa |

For me it has never made sense to be standing there with three ropes of differing lengths. So, in the process of doing several cut/restored effects (intermixed with other things), I wind up cutting the rope into three sections in order to do certain effects, e.g. some Ring on String moves work better with a short piece. Then I do Professor's Nightmare with the three different length section -- first making them the same length, and then finally restoring them all to a single piece. My story line is always related to the audience and changes each time -- usually following a theme of my bumbling through and magic saving me from myself.

For Kids shows I use the fact that we are different. We look different, have different personalities and different likes and dislikes. But we are all as important as each other. I labor the self worth issue and the fact that we all have strengths and weakness but for the most part, considering all this we are all pretty much equal

You can come up with a variety of bits for Prof Nitemare that work
for many different venues. When doing presentations (biz, school, etc.), you can do something along these lines. There are 3 keys to SUCCESS (or whatever): A, B, C. A is ... , B is ..., and C is ... People ask me, which do I think is most important? Well, they all matter equally. You need to do A. You need B. You need C. (equal ropes) But, in reality, when you apply these principles, they can compound exponentially! (make long rope). But the bottom line, you need to focus on the three basics: A, B, and C (back to orig size). This is a template I use for many different programs and audiences. In this way, you're using Prof Nitemare as a means to get across key speaking / instructional points -- with the added benefit of solid magic in the midst. --Jack

Jacks offering just made me realize how this effect can be used to explain a teacher's grading system:
1 - everyone starts out the same (one long rope) 2 - about half will only do what is expected of them and earn a "C" (cut in hald) 3 - we won't talk about those who earn "D" or "F" because nore of you do that, but some will do more than expected and work harder to understand more than what is in the book. (Scissors holding up rope near the middle) 4 - and some will really excel and do something extraordinary and earn an "A" -- while the other super achievers earn a "B" -- maybe something like /this (cut on the 1/3 line) 4 - so we have lots of C's, a good amount of B's and a few A's. 5 - now some teachers grade on a curve, which would have just as many A, B, and C's -- some sort of strange equality (Stretch to length and display separate) 6 - I grade differently. Most of you getting C's could earn B's with just a little more effort and planning and help. But you should think about getting a B as a goal. You try for an A (set the Middle rope aside) 7- in my class it is possible for everyone to get an A, unless the don't try to learn and everybody gets a C -- or worse. (Show one long rope) 8- so, the result is up to each of you C, B, or A (Show separate) 9 - what will not happen is anybody getting a grade they don't deserve (show equal again)

Here are the two I am playing around with.
1) A variation on Bill Abbott's 3 Bears. I tell Goldilocks and the 3 Snakes. The point being that I get almost everything else wrong in the fairy tale, so why not the animals. And when (not if) the kids correct me and say BEARS, I point out that these look nothing like bears. They are white nylon braid snakes. 2) Spaghetti. We have probably all heard this one. I used to be a cook, there was this one customer who was angry that all his noodles were different lengths, I showed him that they are really the same length. He said he was sorry and I hand back the original lengths. Not a long routine, but it has better motivation than the 3 Snakes/bears. -Patrick |

I second Jack Turk's comments.
I am in management but I perform magic as a hobby. Over the years I have used this effect many times for emphasis and as an attention getter for business presentations. You can frequently find a way to tie it in. The topics are different, but for me they usually were about the need for change or the need for consistancy. The most interesting thing I have found in this type of situation is that the connection between what they see in the trick and what you are speaking about does not have to match 100% logically and point by point in order to effective and memorable. As long as it fits loosely it works. |
