"by George" is a new novel by Wesley Stace, the real name of the singer John Wesley Harding. I highly recommend it to all you folks who love vent.

It is the story of a British theatrical family in the middle of the last century. The story has two protagonists, both named George Fisher. One is an 11 year old boy, and the other is a ventriloquist figure. The story is about both their journeys to maturity and happiness.

Half of the story is written by the real George, and half is wooden George's memoirs. This is not just a cutesy, if questionable, literary device, but makes complete sense in the context of the novel. The characters are vivid, the settings historically realistic, and the plot is a page turner.

One thing that is wonderful is that there are no "twisted" ventriloquists with bizarre personalities. The art comes off very well and very well respected.

The book is available from Amazon.com.

Enjoy!

I just finished reading this book last night and I can't recommend it enough. Bob has pretty well described what it's about, all I can add is that it is a truly excellent, well written story.

I bought a copy and read it last year. I just love this book. It's a great story with some completely unexpected turns and as Bob said, the art is treated with respect. Plus, the world of British music hall portrayed in some parts of the book I find fascinating.

My signature, the quote by Longfellow, came from the beginning of the book - once I saw it, I just thought "how perfect".

Tonite I'll be starting in on Dunham's book.

I was sent this book by the publisher before it was released and they asked me to read it and give them my thoughts and although my statements to them was not in the book I did give them a rave review. I highly recomend this book. As Bob said not only is the story great but the settings are all factually correct. Simply a great read!!

I'm revising this thread because when I read it about a month ago, I was inspired to buy this book. I'm about 1/2 way through and concur with the reviews here. It's an excellent novel. Of course the fact that it's centered on ventriloquism is a major plus.

I found an out-of-print first edition, hard cover version that is signed by the author, Wesley Stace. Not being a collector of anything, except maybe good wishes, I'd be happy to send it along to anyone who would like it. If interested, please send me a PM (first come, first served) and when I'm done, I'll mail to you.
