There are many effective ways of revealing a forced card and I'm sure Branded is one of them. However, if one is willing to put in a little practice and sacrifice a little pocket space you can't beat the effect of anyone calling out any card as Third Degree Burn allows. There is a reason why the Invisible Deck continues to be one of the greatest magical effects one can perform. Third Degree Burn is the same effect without the deck. I applaud Branded for its practicality but as far as effects go, Third Degree Burn is way ahead.

Thank you for taking the time to post on the forums Jason. I still get lots of use out of Third Degree Burn. I love the fact that laymen can just THINK of a card.
A major plus over Branded because you don't need a deck of cards.

Hello all:
Thank you for the kind words you guys! As I say, you can certainly use my "Third Degree Burn" to FORCE ANY card that you want, but the REAL strength is in the fact that you can perform the trick WITHOUT a force and WITHOUT a deck of cards----something y'all are recognizing and praising! lol Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Jason Palter Paltergeist Unlimited (416) 410-5766 |

This is one of my favourite card "gimmicks" ever.
Its a huge step forward for magicians, the concept is very good. If you like - "name any card effects" - then this is a must for your repertoire, sure. I need to buy a new gimmick, I lost it under "unclear" circumstances or was it just black magic? |

I recently ordered TDB and am pleased overall.
As I was practicing with it initially I found that some spectators noticed fiddling in my pocket. I've come up with one possible variation that I thought I'd share: Instead of having a spectator name a card aloud, have them draw the card they're thinking of on your palm with their finger. I have them first draw the suit, and then draw the value. This has three advantages: 1. You can 'divine' what card they're thinking of without having them say a word. 2. It misdirects their attention away from the 'fiddling' in your pocket. Their eyes are focused on your palm. 3. Having demonstrated your abilities, you can transition easily into a palm read. |

Hello all:
Hey Bastien, I'm glad that you're enjoying my Third Degree Burn! That was a great idea that you came up with; thank you for posting it! I've found various types of misdirection to use when doing the "dirty work" in the routine, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want some more thoughts. Thank you for your time and of course for your business! Best regards, Jason Palter Paltergeist Unlimited (416) 410-5766 |

Hey Jason,
Happy New Year! I received TDB recently and after watching the DVD I believe I've come up with a simple solution to a choice of "9" and was wondering if you'd heard of an improvement to the the "9 problem?" Have been searching around to see if anyone has come up with one, but haven't seen any indication on the Café Forum. Are there any you know of? Larry |

TDB takes a bit more practice than Branded but once you got it, the effect is way more powerful.
Not having to force a card makes all the difference in the world. My questioning of suit and then value is at a quicker pace than when I first started. Thanks Jason, Eric |

Hello all:
Thank you for sending me the great suggestion, Larry! I really appreciate it. I've been gathering up quite a file of ideas that people keep sending me for my "Third Degree Burn", so you never know what may come out in the future... And Eric I also really appreciate your comments. Tim's "Branded" is a great trick, but my "Third Degree Burn" really is designed with a different purpose in mind; I'm glad you're enjoying it and see the real value in the trick and gimmick. I'm also glad that you are getting quicker at the finding of the suit/value. Everyone tells me that all they have to do is give "Third Degree Burn" a few minutes of practice and then they have no problem....They also say that the more they do it (as per my instructions), the easier and easier it becomes-----as you've discovered yourself, Eric! lol Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Jason Palter Paltergeist Unlimited (416) 410-5766 |

There has been some alluding to size in the pocket, but can someone tell me if this will actually fit comfortably into a JEANS pocket?
Jeans typically have much less pocket space than suit pants or trousers - as well as less maneuver room.

U will have no problems putting in any front pocket that you may have.

It will fit into any pocket no problem, but you need to maipulate the gimmick inside the pocket - which in very tight jeans could look a little dubious!

So with tighter jeans pockets it becomes more of the "creepy magician fondling himself before showing us something amazing!" hahaha
I hate when I get a case of curiosity and want to buy something just to see it. lol

I have had the gimmick for a couple of years, took all the time to learn to use it and have carried it in my pocket on a LOT of gigs. I have never used it for lay people yet, only fellow magicians. I am just not comfortable with the pocket work required, being a tall guy my pockets are too close to the spectator's eye level. However, I really like the very well-constructed gimmick: after your advise I will consider putting it back in my pocket and give it another go. If anyone else has good ideas on how to solve the pocket problem I would like to hear them. Kim |

Hello all:
I wanted to mention this in regards to the pocket stuff and how I sort of "cover/misdirect" while performing the trick: To tell you the truth, I always approach the group/spectator knowing what I am going to do first. So if I know that I'm going to open with a coin trick followed by a card trick, then I'm not so concerned with having my hands in my pockets. But if I know I will open with TDB (Third Degree Burn) or that it will be my second trick, then I actually may have my hands in my pockets at the beginning when I approach them. While I'm talking to them, I actually have my hands going in and out of my pockets (casually) while I'm talking to them. What I'm doing is being as casual as possible, but also setting up in their mind that my hands are visible and are not visible. I want them to be able to think back and remember that my hands were both in AND out of my pockets, and that I was acting fairly "normal". When I ask them the name of their card for TDB, then my right hand (gimmick in the right pocket) will be in the pocket at that point. I may also put my left hand in my pocket too----I'm just being really casual with them. Once I have the impression on my finger and thumb, I again may bring my hand(s) in and out of my pocket(s)----and then ask them for the lighter. If they don't have one (I keep mine in my left pocket), here is a nice subtlety: I actually put both hands into BOTH pockets and say, "Uhm...wait, I have one here somewhere....Ah here it is!". I then pull it out of my left pocket as my right hand also comes out of its pocket too. Again, I want them to remember that my hands were in and out of BOTH pockets, and I was acting fairly "normal". That way they can't necessarily trace back and remember that I only had my hand in there once, took it out, and then the blisters appeared if you catch my drift. I of course stall a little by asking them various questions (as per the instructions). The more comfortable you are with the gimmick, the faster that you will get the impressions. I hope that helps a little; please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you for your time. Best regards, Jason Palter Paltergeist Unlimited (416) 410-5766 |

Received 2.0 today and I cannot comprehend how anyone can manage to use this gimmick in his pocket quick enough and without making it look like he's pleasuring himself. The simple act of imprinting your fingers requires you to bend your wrist, never mind all the twisting which is incredibly difficult. Also not to mention that the gimmick is loose and so you can get the correct positioning but then it could spin on you when you try and get the impression. I wish Jason had gone into specific details on how to use the gimmick inside of the pocket. Any help?
