Hello there --
I am interested in obtaining a sub-trunk for use with the Metamorphosis illusion. Will someone be kind enough to tell me if there are any details I should be sure to look for? There are a number of them on Magicauction.com ranging in price from $400-$2000. I'm looking to spend as little as possible, of course, but I want a product that's going to make the illusion possible to do. For those of you with experience performing this illusion, can you offer any insight on this prop? Thanks, Jack |

Jack, As you know, in most cases, the more you Pay the more Dependabilty you get. I would suggest buying an Illusion built by a reputable bulder or a known Woodworker. The Sub-Trunk is a typical Illusion of choice for Amatures to take a shot at building. Which leaves plenty of "Illusions" which are only good for storing old toys in! So be careful as to what you buy and try to actually inspect it first if possible. If you want to spend the extra money, I would always be glad to offer my building service. Check my other posting in this categorie as I have gave some construction tips to another member.
Hope this helps a bit! Chance Wolf http://www.wolfsmagic.com/

Make sure you get quality. The other important factor is if you need road cases, and for it to break down for traveling. Give it some serious thought.

Jack,
You should also be sure about your size and the box's ability to hold you and let you and your assistant get in and out easily. I went to Owen's Magic to get mine and ended up buying a used escape trunk as my shoulders were just too wide for a standard sub trunk. It works beautifully (has for 15 years, and it was 30 years old when I bought it). Cost me $250 and another $300 to refurbish (new cloth drop, etc.) Good luck in your quest. Steven

It depends on the style you want. Also, top-worker, end worker, back-worker. Chalet Magic makes a nice Packing Crate Style, which I have, they make others but have not seen them. Get a "normal" lid to match. Chalets' also breaks down. I have a Thayer style steamer trunk, made by a woodworker, it can be examined, and is quite large. I have two other box types, meant for stage use only, no one able to examine, sliding bolts lock the "secret", and battery lights inside. (I guess so you don't feel lonely!!!!).
If only for stage use, a packing case is very easy to have built, especially if it is all solid. Use the best ply though, you don't want it warping. Lots of plans out there, will not comment on which is best. Have you thought of Steinmeyers' One Inch Hole? Makes a nice change!! Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!"

Blair,
In your opinion, which is best? Top/back/end workers? This will be for stage use but haveing the ability to examine it would be good. I have indeed considered the one-inch-hole illusion as well... Jack |

Top worker allows for a "drop in" if you are slim enough. Gives a fast change. Curtain can also hug the box, making for a smaller hoop, same size as panels if you are breaking it down.
The back worker also has its place as it allows for what can seem to be an incredibly fast change, also allows an easier entry for a third party as a surprise ending. Drawback to me is that you have to get up on the box, ie. the person you are exchanging with. This needs a more cabinet style encosure. Hope the comments help. Anyone else wish to add?? The comments do help, Thank you. The only models I've seen available for sale are the top-working style. I don't think these would be a problem. When I get my trunk I'll need to spend some time figuring out the exact movements required to make it look right on stage. Is there a standard?

Not sure what you mean by a standard. However I will comment on the speed of the exchange. In my experience it seems that divers have the fastest exchange. I was a diver for my high school swim team. I also believe that The Pendragons were also divers in high school. Might want to take a look at the local swimming pool.
Just a thought, Mike |

That's a pretty good point. Someone who is used to moving around quickly would be able to accomplish this illusion. I guess I'm just not completely sure what kind of movements are really necessary for both the magician and the assistant, though I do have a general idea. I assume the assistant just
"drops" while I am positioned directly in front of, or behind, her... Jack |

My wife does the drop. It's amazing how scary it is droping through a small hole, even though it is a small distance. A top loader will give you more flexability in performance, but on stage a back loader can be super fast. You can do the reveal before the trap is closed. If you build the box to break down, it's nice to have both.

Can anyone recommend a good place to find plans? I was thinking of building it myself, but in order to do so I would need a good set of instructions.

Osborne sells an excellent set of plans for the subtrunk. They are the plans we build our model from.

Thanks, Devin. I'll definately look into that! Are these the same plans that would be in the "illusion book" series?

I suggest buying the Paul Osbourne books. That way, if your trunk gets messed up, you can build a new one aswell as many other illusions.

Thanks for all of your input. I'm going to go ahead and buy the Simplex Sub Trunk plan from Tannen's Magic. This should save me loads of money and allow me to take even more pride in the finished product. Then, I can sell it for like $2000. Haha just kidding.
