Today I did a search for "hypnosis" under NEWS on google - and it returned several versions of the same story (from multiple countries) about actor Ben Afflec appearing on Oprah this week, and his telling her about how he finally quit smoking with hypnosis, due to Matt Damon's urging.
The majority of the remaining stories, from around the world, were pseudo press releases - local industry/human interest type stories, for clinical hypnotists. However, when I searched for "stage hypnosis," I found most of the same clinical stories, with just a very few scattered local hypnotist entertainment stories. It's no doubt that the famous names in the Oprah story will help validate the legitimacy of hypnosis for life improvement around the world - and that's always a good thing. But I wonder - 1) Will it help affect/influence the public's view of stage hypnosis entertainment - positively, negatively, or not at all? and 2) Have any of you ever actively tried to utilize the media for personal or general stage hypnosis promotion in this way? It's been my experience that most writers/broadcasters are always looking for new, interesting stories to air/print - and a few phone calls or emails to local reporters will usualy render a positive response, aired/published within a month. So - what are your thoughts/experiences? |

That's an excellent idea. Press Releases are a great way to advertise your business, and stage hypnosis is a business. Plus, stage hypnosis is inherently interesting. I think it is, anyway.
A really good way to use press releases is to tie it into a current event, much like you probably saw with the clinical hypnotists in regard to the news about Ben Affleck. If you can't tie it into a current event, what about a holiday? "HypnoScriptoHottie Puts On Valentine's Day Show--Come See Love At First Sight!" I haven't used any press releases myself yet, but I mean to soon. And I know other people have used them to great effect. |

I do a public 4-walled show once a month - my own venture. I find the media has been very supportive. Local radio and small tv shows have a hard time looking for content to fill a 3 hour morning show. Make a press release - send it to the targetted media - and follow up with a phone call. They key is to have a story attached to it. In most cases, the fact that your doing a show will suffice. I have some clips I can post if anyone is interested of me doing TV appearances plugging my shows.
