I looked through the forums and didn't see anyone mentioning what they thought was the best thumbtip.
I see many cheap plastic ones, some vinyl ones, ones by Vernet etc.. Could someone kindly explain the pros and cons of the various types - plastic vs. vinyl and what some of the better-made more realistic ones are?

The best TT is one that fits you the best and has as close to the same color tone as possible.

I prefer plastic because it slides on and off easier in my opinion.

I switch between a long plastic one and a regular vinyl one. they're both good.
get one of each. the larger the unit, the less tense your hands get when you use one. that is something to consider. you do not want the audience to perceive any tension. you should be able to vanish a silk without "pushing hard". a larger space makes that easier. for the same reason, a production is also easier.

Personally, I prefer the ones that are made with Rocco's D'Lites.
Spoke with him about it and getting some plain TT's, but unfortunately, have not heard back. These TTs are really nice. At least for me, they fit well, and are rigid AND supple enough to be very versatile.... Perhaps if we send him some e-mails he'd consider selling them separately... ;-)

Yes. But dang these tips are scary real-looking. Why not have a really well-made prop? I know that spectators shouldn't see the tip anyway, but I think these tips offer the possibility of more open (and natural) handling. |

I only have one, a Vernet and I find it to be too large around my thumb but with proper handling no one ever notices.

I bought a few of the more expensive TT's but the one I use on a daily basis is my 3$ Vernet.
It's not the size of the wand that matters, it's the "magic" in it...

Put some tin foil in the tip and this will protect it from being burnt with cigarette vanish.

Classic Vernet or King Sized Vernet - depending on what you're doing.
EDIT: Was that really my 500th post? Wow, I really need to get a social life.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

Different materials work better for different effects. I like a harder plastic type for bill switches. I find that the bill slides in and out way easier with a softer material. But the softer material will work a lot better if you need to seal against vanished substances. That's been my experence anyways.

As mentioned elsewhere, if you are into PW you cannot beat the Zip pen which is sold at most office supply stores.

I have both vinyl and plastic. In fact I have multiple ones of each. I use different ones for different tricks. I keep a couple in my briefcase and in zip locks with specific tricks. They are cheap for the most part and about the most versitile prop you can own. I also own a metal tip my great uncle used to burn and restore hankerchiefs when I was young.
