I may be wrong, but I kind of remember that there was a rumour about a book in the working about the magic of Larry West. It seems to have fallen on the way side though Too bad!

Here's an interesting story about how I learned it and "the one that got away." Decades ago, I used to attend the local SAM meetings in Washington, D.C., and I became friends with Larry West. The SAM meetings were held in the National Press Club building, and after the meetings a number of magicians, including Larry West and me, would go to the bar downstairs and show each other magic until the wee hours. One night, Larry performed his color changing deck effect for me and fooled me so badly that I felt like a kid again (and I had been performing magic for close to 20 years at that point). Every time I saw him at SAM meetings, I begged him to teach me the effect, and finally, after one year of me nagging him, he relented. He must have realized that was the only way to shut me up, although duct tape would have been more efficient. What about the "one that got away?" Years after he taught me the effect, I mentioned to him that I had been using it a lot, to an incredibly strong response. He told me that the version he taught me sucked. I told him that he was crazy! He told me that I was the one who was crazy, because in the ensuing years, he had developed a version that was a lot more direct (that piqued my interest because the version that he taught me was already very direct), and that it used no gimmicked cards, which meant that at the end, a spectator could handle everything and there was nothing to find. Huh, how was that possible? I'll never know because I didn't nag him again. That's the one that got away. I'd love to see a big book of Larry West's material published, because I'd love to see him honored and I think the book would be a hit. Larry P.S. - The purpose of my posts is not to slam Stranger's Gallery. John Bannon is a very clever man, and if Stranger's Gallery is working for you, as it should, that's all that matters! |

Interesting comments, Larry, I certainly agree with you about the Rainbow deck ending. I dis once see Larry do a color changing packet effect years ago at the last Jack Hughes Wizard Weekend in England. Possibly that was the one. I think the routine is in print, if I get chance to look for it I will.
Back! No, cannot find it, it probably was in the lecture notes for that event, (which I no longer have) but I thought it might have been in his booklet "Corner On The Market". It isn't. |

Jennings,
I'm a big Bannon fan and you've done Stranger's Gallery more than justice. Well done and very impressive. John |

Hi Guys and thanks for all the comments on the video. I perform the effect pretty much how Bannon describes it.
One tip I would give is to throw the gaffs provided with the effect away ! They are very poor and the black back bicycle gaff looks very much like a blue back.(I would imagine copyright problems mean they can't supply the nicer backed cards I use in the effect.) Instead, go to Cards By Martin and get Neil M Lester to make you a set like the ones I am using in the video. They are comparitively cheap and kick the effect up to the next level. Just do a google in Cards By Martin to find his site. Larry, I am looking forward to your future post on the possibility of publishing Larry's original version. |

I agree Neil Lester made me a set also. They were different from the ones Jennings used but they are GREAT.

Since I started this I want to say that when I called Jennings' performance "decent" it was somewhat tongue in cheek. It's really very nice and the one I studied in working it out myself. I have Bannon's book, the DVD with his performance, as well as the marketed version. Jennings does it better than Bannon. Thank you for sharing.
As for the cards that come with the marketed version, I chucked the black one too for the same reason. Also, kicker ending is actually a red Aviator deck. Faces are the same as Bikes and the contrast is very nice. I substituted a R/B double backer and was all set. Also, FWIW, if you get Martini's Rainbow deck, it comes with some nice ones as well. |

I've been using this for over 10 years and feel it is the best color changing deck I've come across. The reactions it gets are worth the extra pocket space required to carry the deck. I use the Rainbow Deck ending and feel it is a far superior ending. I've experimented with rainbow vs. no rainbow and, whether it seems logical to us or not, spectators just plain like it better hands down. In one test, I performed the trick using just a regular red deck ending. Later that night, the boss came and asked me to repeat it again for a different group. I decided to switch in my rainbow deck as a test. I had planned to later ask the boss which version he preferred better....but I didn't need to as he blurted out, "that's way better than the way you did it earlier." From that day on, I've stuck with the Rainbow.

OK. I'm sold on trying Strangers Gallery with a rainbow deck. Does anyone have a link for a source ? Cards need to be poker size and printed on bicycle stock.

If you want to try a RD, this is a really nice one at a very fair price for Café members. Read the thread. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=203
I'm curious how it goes. Please post how it's received. |

Randy Wakeman has marketed at least two different Rainbow-decks.
They match Bikes (and Tally-Hos) perfectly. Bjørn

The Martini Rainbow Deck is much better than the Wakeman deck that is currently available.

Agreed. And you get the necessary gaffs for SG. 10 bucks including postage is hard to beat too, assuming his offer to Café members is still available.
