Hey!
I have an important magic show in two week an few days ago I broke my wrist. Could you give me some ideas about what tricks could I do using only my left hand? I'm right-handed, that is the big problem. Thank you very much!! |

For sure! Slim is spot-on.
This is a time to call a colleague you respect and let your client know you've found them a fine replacement due to your accident, they'll respect you and appreciate your professionalism. Then, if you've build a good working relationship with your peer, he'll do the same for you when he has an accident of conflict. There are only two or three performers I'd do this with in my market, but we keep saving each other's rear-ends year after year. No money exchanges hands for leads or show-fill-ins but it works out about even in the end, and most importantly the clients are always saved and impressed. Being a professional or a semi-professional is knowing when to hold and when to fold. Best of luck healing! Magically, Walt |

No one has asked, what kind of material do you perform?? Do you use your right hand often?? I assume you can move your right arm?
Plus.....How long do you have to do? This is KEY! AND ALSO...do you work with an assistant? Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!" (Come on guys we are supposed to be creative here!)

Blair...you're right. Sorry about that magodiego.
So, what type of effects might you be doing? If you're more of a talker and have an assistant to do the "work", then it might not be so bad. If, on the other hand (sorry...no pun intended), you're planning on doing a lot of card work, well...you might be in trouble if you work alone. As one who has had several broken arms in the past (can you believe it?), I know what you're faced with. Since it's an "important magic show" and you broke your good, more often relied on, hand, give thought to what you'll be doing and how it will come across. Good luck. As they say in show business...break a ..., oh never mind. Mark. PS - Welcome to the Café magodiego. I look forward to hearing more from you. |

You got your answer buddy, call someone to fill in. There's no sense in having a bad performance.
Sure we all need the work but, maybe one day you'll be able to help someone else out in a similar situation. Steve |

Mentalism or Hypnosis

A broken wrist, on your dominant hand, is a true set-back.
Yes, you may be able to drastically alter your show, but then you may be under-prepared. Yes, you could limp through your more push-button effects, but then you'd not be giving the best-of-your-best. While, with his years on stage, Blair is being generous, from your photo you appear to be young, so I feel we're doing you a favor to cultivate professional habits early... So like Chez, I stick to my original thought... find a quality replacement for this show, and set-up a friendly-professional relationship with a colleague, that will serve you both for years. This happened to Eric Mead and he started performing mentalism. In the meantime, I would refer the show to a colleague. Good luck.

I have signed contracts with venues in the past that specifically say I must bring my A-Game or find a great replacement. I was once down with the flu in just this situation and they were very happy for the lengths I took to find someone. Needless to say they not only brought me back, they offered to pay me more the following year.
The advice above is good advice, I took recommend bringing in a suitable replacement. Do it for the audience sake.

I would still have lliked to know how long he had to do???
Maybe we could have been creative for him. Is it a 5 minute spot on a variety show?? or a 1 hour show? Blair Marshall "ShaZzam!" You could do as suggested and pass the show to a trusted friend (and good performer), but there are times where for a sheer lack of alternatives you HAVE to go on!

In 1976, Jerry Conklin...of The Amazing Conklins fell backstacge and broke his arm (during intermission) at show in New Mexico...Jerry finished the show with a female assistant "replacing" his right arm. This was a show produces by Phillip Morris...Morris later said that Conklin truly was "amazing".

I remember Jerry telling me about that story. I know he has footage of his show. Wonder if he has any footage of this show. Might be a good learning tool.
I know Rick Fisher has a video in his shop of Jerry shows. Rick might be able to put some insight on this subject if there is a video of this specific show.

Eric. I realize your saying it as a joke.
But even with a broken wrist.. even illusion shows are hard to do. I tryed doing one with a broken wrist (left the cast for 3 days so I could do the show then they put it on) but its hard. unloading, setting up, turning props, moving props, dance routines etc. with a broken wrist. |
