Are opium coins any good,... and what is the exact effect?

They are gaffed coins that allow you to have two half dollars INSTANTLY turn into chinese just by closing your hand briefly. There are some cool effects you can do with them if you get creative.

Hi!
The Gaff is cool! I have A few routines for it! But I do not have anything in print yet! Best David Neighbors The Coinjurer |

Great Effect. My set is made from Morgan dollars. I recommend that you do this as one of several coin effects with the same size coin where the coins can be examined or at least shown on both sides.

When the coins transform into Chinese coins,... do the Chinese coins have holes in the middle?

The Opium Coins I have came from Sasco. I belive the original routine is to show two half dollars (fanned) and then stacking them in order to push a cig thru two coins as opposed to only one. The finale is having the coins turn into chinese coins. I'll agree I'm not the most creative guy out here, but I'm not that impressed with them. I never use them.
In December of '06 I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans. One in a million people worldwide are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. Sarcomas account for 1% of all cancers. Knowledge is power!

No the coins can not be examined. Thus you need to worked into a routine where they are assumed to be normal coins.

I don't usually use gaffed coins but the Opium coins are an exception. The routine I developed is a Spellbound type effect with a Morgan and Chinese coin with a hole. Following Spellbound, I'm left with a Chinese coin in the hand. I then bring out a Morgan showing it and the Chinese coin on both sides using a subtlety, then change them to two Morgans. I then bring out two Chinese coins from the pocket and wave them over the two Morgans in the other hand and they change to 2 more Chinese coins. The 4 Chinese coins are then used for a quick coins across and I'm done. Because of the hole in the coin people don't suspect a gaff and if the coins are handled properly the gaffs are very deceptive.

I don't know that much about them but what I've heard they're pretty cool! (exept you can't examine them)

Is Sasco the only company that makes it? It sounds like a cool effect, but their products are not usually of the highest quality, so I'm always a little skeptical about getting anything made by them.

No. Empire Coin Magic makes it as well. It's about $10 more for the set from them.
Of course, there's always a custom set, if you want to spend the money. Mike |

I can change a half dollar into any small object using the heel tap which to me is extremely visual

If you insist on letting them examine everything, all of the time, you'll never have the opportunity to perform some great effects. I'll start with a straight coin effect or two to build trust, and then bring in the gaffs, or I'll routine the gaff effects to end clean, but I never hand out my coins freely either way. I show them, flip them, roll them, spin them, and do many other visual things that sell the coins as being real. As soon as you start handing all of your stuff out to anyone who wants to see it, you start to lose control of the routine. All the Best, Mike |

I talked to Todd yesterday, and you don't even want to know the cost of a custom set, not that his work isn't worth every penny... it is! But I'd try out a cheaper version to see if you can work it into your stuff before breaking the bank.
All the Best, Mike |
