I have often heard that there is written more books on magic than any other subject, except for maybe within medical science. Is there anyone which have firm information on this?

I've heard this too...that there is more written on magic than any subject other than law and medicine. I'd be interested in seeing information on this, too.

I've also heard magicians make that claim...or variants thereof.
I've heard it with "chess" taking the place of medical science. I've heard it with "cookbooks" being the other category. I've heard dozens of variants, mutually contradictory. I don't believe any of them. |

I believe it is "more books than any other performance art."

Brad I find this hard to believe too. Film, popular music seem to have huge listings.
I think it's something to do with wanting to feel our "topic" is somehow special. Just as people interested in military history, cars would feel their topic was too. My guess... cookbooks or travel |

I don't know if it's true or not. Just reporting the version of the quote which I have heard given before.

It sounds to me like the statements that the Chinese Linking Rings are 2000 years old or the Cups and Balls were performed back in ancient Egypt. They are great lines to use during a magical performance, but they don't hold up to any actual scrutiny.

To answer this question, one would have to know the relative amount of published books in every other field...
It is an interesting thought though, but I highly doubt it. Books on Medicine and even just general science like Biology have many sub-topics of focus, i.e. Genetics, Protein Structure, etc. So these books then constitute to the Biology library as a whole, making the book bank of Biology larger than originally thought.

Rather than being a quote intended to make us feel special, I have always heard it used as an indictment of our ability to keep secrets.

I haven't heard this quote before, but it doesn't surprise me. Especially if we take into account all of the lecture notes and one trick pamphlets. It seems as though new things are rushed to magic shelves everyday...

I'd also heard it as more books about magic than about all the other performing arts. I can easily believe it.

There are nowhere near as many technical books about the art of film making or popular music. I would guess that there are more books teaching magic than there are teaching all the other performing arts combined. |

Magic has always been an industry which has published internally and taken pains to keep their books OUT of the mainstream bookstores. Plus, it has been permissible to write about magic from hundreds of years more than it was considered permissible to publish material on sex.

I have my doubts about this assertion, but more accurately it's almost certainly more *titles* published than other performing arts. Print runs of magic books are generally very small, especially compared to a book that's intended for your local bookstore.

Actually, in response to someone mentioning the Cups and Balls as performed in Ancient Egypt: Strong archaelogical evidence suggests that this effect in some form WAS already known in Ancient Egypt. Later - much later - it was so well known throughout the Roman Republic and Empire that the Romans used the term acetabularii to describe the performers of this effect. The word coming from the term for little stones.
When I was in university, I was told by a few librarians that Magic is second only to religious works in terms of quantity. I do not recall the exact statistics nor the sources of their conclusion, but, I do find it interesting. Trivia: DRACULA ranks VERY close to the Bible in terms of volumes printed. A shame Bram Stoker's estate was such a shambles!! In hoc signo vinces, Vlad |
