Has none of you been affected by the revelation of the T.T in the movie "Night at the museum"? I usually do my routine of the silk that disappears and reappears in any place,(Apple, glass, pedestal etc) and from the time of the revelation in the movie there are many the children who say to me, I know how this trick is done!!!I see in the movie "Night at..bla bla bla...." Wath we can do in this "DIFFICULT" situation?
Thanks, Hansel!

I did a birthday party yesterday and the second I pulled out the red handkerchief and told them I was going to make it vanish they all started telling me about the plastic thumb thingy. "My brother's got one of those" they said. Fortunately I do a variation of Silly Billy's routine out of his excellent book Seriously Silly so the kid's knowing about the plastic thumb thingy is not a problem.

Yes, I have had MANY who say something like "fake thumb" the SECOND they see a silk hanky of any kind come out. Like Payne however, I abandoned the TT (for silks) a couple of years ago. But it still kills for bill switches and many other illusions.
I guess we'll just have to be challenged to be creative. Let's turn this into a game: Give an alternative to making a 9" silk vanish. No TT's, no dye tubes. I'll start: The Color Changing Silk Tie a piece of elastic (any color) to an arm band, slide the armband up your right arm, almost to the armpit. Tie the other end of the elastic to a the end of a (blue) silk, put your shirt on over the whole contraption. Pull the silk out from your right sleeve. Ball up a different color silk (yellow) and hide it tightly in your right hand, with the same hand hold the very end of the tied silk (hiding the elastic) then approach your audience... wave the (blue silk) around right in front of them, offering to make it change colors right before their eyes, count out loud to 3, but nothing happens...ask them to come up with a great magic word and try the count again...this time in a large motion, hold the blue silk down low and toss it upwards as your arm raises upward, it will look like it flies into the air turning yellow instantly! The blue will retract up your sleeve in a blink. Try it! What's your idea? |

Try using David Williamson's vanish where a wand picks up the TT just before the vanish. Then slip it back on to make it re-appear. You may notice that kids, or even adults, who "know" about the TT only seem to know that it VANISHES a little red hanky. The appearance of any item from the TT is still shocking! ...IF they didn't see it vanish by one.
Also, and this has been true for me for well over 10 years, if I don't use a RED silk, I don't get called on it! Not sure why, maybe it's a rule that if you expose this trick you must use a red silk, and that's how every child remembers it. Really, try switching over to a diferent color silk and see if that solves your problem.

Here is a thought...if you use pull or thumb tip, the EFFECT is still the same. The silk goes into your hands and vanishes without the gaff being seen.
So why would using a pull stop children suggesting a TT? They might be wrong but it doesn't matter, they THINK they are right. You could stop the show and show them your empty thumb but why create an adversarial atmosphere where you have to prove that's not how you did it. The same applies to any method that involves the stuffing of a silk into your hand. |

Yes, the EFFECT is the same, well not really in my example, but the METHOD is different. You should know, as magicians, this allows you to use the sucker-effect principal and play along with them, letting them think they know how it's done, then ask someone to pull off your thumb, and of course it's not there. Let them burn your hands before & after. BAM, that's magic. You have just created an illusion that will last forever in their memory. This is an old principal, but effective and we should not forget it. |

Anyone who still performs old classics like the TT and the Svengali Deck using the same old tired techniques deserves to be caught. Magic is a progressive art. You can still use the old tools but you have to be creative and original enough to stay ahead of the inevitable public familiarity. Stuffing a red silk into a closed fist is literally a red flag for today's kids. Be creative and learn the finer TT handling styles that do not include stuffing the gaff onto your thumb.

Just because your using a TT doesn't mean you have to put it on your thumb. I was teaching a magic class and one of my students brought in a TT. I borrowed it off of him and performed with it and still fooled them.
Sometimes it seems there are more than one of me.

Skip hit the nail on the head! Just use it in a way they've never seen!
One could simply roll up a small piece of paper into a tube (w/TT inside) and vanish the hank - then tear up the paper tube, tossing the remnants into the group. That takes all heat away from your hands and puts it all squarely on the paper tube. If you want to finish clean, sprinkle some invisible magic dust (available from the Dean - LOL!) onto the tube of paper just before the vanish. Lyndel |

Skip, right again. Look at things in a different light.
I just finished watching Carl Cloutier's DVD "Bill In Kiwi" (that is just one of several routines on this 2 DVD set). He uses TT, sleaving and a Topit extensively - and very well. None are a "stand alone tricks" but put together in some great routines. Nothing new when it comes to gimmicks, but put together beautifully and deceptively with a lot of fun. |

You will learn with experience you can do any type of sucker effect and have it work out in a pleasing way for the audience. I didn't say Bam, in your face...I said, "Bam, that's magic." It means magic that really makes an impact. I hope we all do that kind of magic in our shows. |

I love it when someone (even an adult) says something to me about a TT, like they are "in the know".
I say, "Oh, yeah, I used to use that when I first started,".... And then I have often done the TT bill switch. Most people have no clue what it's for other than disappearing a little red rag. BTW, I just learned a great no TT bill switch from John Lovick at MagiFest. It's in his notes and I'm sure his big book on bill switches.
