I have a show which I perform for High School students in which I explain many of the scams online. the show is about the psychology con artists. http://www.conman.com.au/firewall.html
The show is very successful accept for one part. the section on stranger danger online always falls flat. In all of the other routines there is a sense of real excitement and danger as I 'scam' various audience members. However, the section in which I explain how people you meet online are not always who they say they are tends to fall flat. I'd love any hints or ideas for routines that would help get these ideas across. Remember - it's for HIGH SCHOOL students! |

Show a picture of a middle aged man in his underwear sitting at a computer in a chat room claiming to be a teenage girl. Unshaven, hair mussed, etc.

Nicolas,
I didn't really put any thought into this, but as soon as I read your post I thought of a Dangerous Monte-type trick. There are several different versions and variations of this effect, and it should produce the feeling of real excitement and danger you are striving for. You could present it as you never know what/who is on the other end of the line, or under the styrofoam cup (or whatever). Having said all that, there have been serious injuries that have occured while performing tricks of this type. If I were doing them I would never let the audience member smash the cup, and I would find a 100%, foolproof method. Like I said, it came to my mind very quickly. It may not be what you are looking for but I thought I would post the idea. Regan

It's a real creepy reminder of the need for kids to be extremely cautious and aware of privacy while surfing the net. I'm wondering if you could incorporate a mentalism kind effect (I'm not a mentalist so I don't have any specific effects in mind )where just like you know who they are or what they might be thinking the same goes when you're online. I'm a teacher and I was considering using Facebook for some type of classroom project. I didn't really have a handle on what it was and what it looked like so I went for a visit. If you did the same thing at the school you had booked you'd probably come up with all sorts of personal bits of info that one could use in a mentalism routine. Just thinking out loud here and hope this might spark something for you. jeff |

Jeff - I tried exactly that for a high school and the ONLY person listed as being involved with the school who had an open facebook account was the teacher who booked me!

The drama is a head chopper dressed up to look like a harmless photo cut out booth, but the audience can see that it's a chopper. |
