I have just spent a great evening. I sat in front of the TV and watched Don Driver's Jam Auction DVD set. Man, oh man! Buy one of these NOW. The Jam Auction is the kissing cousin of the sideshow and medicine show.
How often have you had the chance to see the REAL work on a classic bit of delightful flim flam? At one time there were Jam Auctions all over the place. Now they are more rare than hen's teeth. Well, this is your lucky day. Don has captured on video in all his glory the legendary Gee Whiz Kid, Jack Nyberg. He is one of the last modern day masters of the Jam Auction. A Jam Auction is a remarkable piece of bamboozlement that will totally amaze you. The guy running the thing gets fairgoers to spend hundreds of dollars on items they probably don't need. HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS! You have to see it for yourself. The Jam Auction is a symphony of psychology. It is one part revival meeting, one part campaign rally, one part lynch mob and all capitalism in its purest form. You will want to watch this several times in order to pick up all the nuances of what is going on. Even though you might never do a Jam Auction, you will learn so much about how to handle a crowd by watching these DVDs. Go to http://www.dondriver.com and reward Don for going to the trouble of making this available. And while you are at it, pick up his DVD on building a tip. It is golden and will be of use to anyone that has to gather a crowd. "Thank you Don" |

Had a vendor friend of mine out doing a fair in Waco about three or four years back. Said it was a rainy Wednesday night at the fair, nothing was going on so he wandered about. There in a corner of the fairgrounds was a tent filled with folks going ah-gaga. It was a jam auction. The way he described it was poetic and wonderful. A true work of art to get folks to part with a dollar. And who has a dollar bill? Hold you hand up there for me while my assistant hands out these free gifts for you. No, you don;t have to pay a thing, these gifts are free--now while my assistants are passing out these gifts, let me show you this right here folks....
I gotta get over to Dons site and check out the action.. Thanks Todd. ciao abigkauna/1 |

A post script, my buddy was talking with the "auctioneer" and he (the auctioneer), said on a slow night like that rainy Wednesday night at the fair, he would take in around $4k Beauty, real beauty...

Thanks Todd, I've got Don's other CDs now I've got to add this to my drool list.
BTW Congratulations on hitting the 1000 mark, we should all be so lucky. Brett, Doug keeps bring this point up because it's affecting him so personally these days... Just remember "it all depends on your reference point in life". Steve |

Actually, Steve that's not it at all. I'm distressingly healthy for an ancient one...but I'm trying my best to disuade Brett from his upcoming visit. I don't want to have to resort to buying Plastic furniture covers from Fingerhut.
You see, the boy is bound to get mad enough at me so he changes his plans and goes to somebody elses house...Never mind...it referenced another thread and the fact that he spent some precious time around a few carney folks who were not exactly House Broke...and here I am explaining a one liner...and I'm another day cl;oser to the house invasion...grrr Back to Don...this DVD is a MUST for me...I'm hoping it comes to RedBox.

Doug, we have an exterminator near us, who always posts a sign about the Pest of the Month. I've never seen Brett's specific name there. Maybe you could use a generic trap?

On an expert sideshow performer? The trap would be the BAIT!

Doug,
Your subtlety was not lost on me. Perhaps mine was lost on you? Don't tell me you're slipping. I was hoping for some more snappy repartee, not an explanation. Anyway, it's good to know you are in such good health. I won’t need to expedite my Death Worm order after all... Be well, Steve |

Fingerhut was not snappy enough? Maybe you need an explaination of Fingerhut.
Probably most do!

Doug, I suppose I'm just too young to get it.
Harley, any news of a class this year? Are you considering a class on the road at any time? Oops, wrong thread, sorry... Back to the Jam Auction But wait - If sign up in the next 30 seconds... |

Please, keep your fingers to yourself! Unless they're part of a sale.
And Doug, since when is that barely-out-of-diapers young guy an expert? He's hardly old enough to stand up and be continent at the same time! (I realize, of course, that some of us can say that about our age, at the other end of the spectrum. And a spectrum being under discussion, it's worth making light of.)

Yeah, huh?
I know. I know. You called me, and I wasn't sitting at the phone drooling, and didn't call you right back. Learn to suffer now, early in your career. It'll save you aggravation later.
