When we talk about resources for silk magic and silk routines, we are reminded of the Encyclopedia of Silk Magic by Harold Rice, which is a collection of material that should be in everyone's library. My question is this, other than the ESM and Hugard's Handkerchief Magic, Jack Chanin's book and Ade Duval, what little know titles should we be looking for?
Bob and Richard, we are counting on you!!!! David |

"Gen" Grant's 3rd set of lecture notes, "Smooth As Silk", which includes a very comprehensive treatment of his version of the Silk Fountain.

Jack Chanin's book is a goldmine. I also like Paul Diamond's video Sympanette in Silk. Marconik has some very good ideas as does Sitta from Italy. Magical Ovette wrote a small booklet.
The other source you might consider is Ask Alexander. It is a searchable datebase for Genii, Linking Ring, and a lot of the older mags. There are some great old ideas in the old books by Goldston and others. Richard

Don't overlook the Walter Gibson stuff. Plus, here on The Café we have Magic Ian who is a powerhouse of creative products to use in silk magic.
Of course, he is a great lecturer today but look back at Tannen catalogs of the 80s and you'll find at least 20 items a year from Magic Ian. Get him for a lecture! He is not that far from your magic club. He lives in Florida. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Next time you see Jeff McBride, remember that he has resources. Ian is one of them! They came from the same magic clubs in New York. |

Gibson got up and started doing split fans and singles productions for the class as Jeff looked on (had his mouth open too). You can read about Jeff and me in some of my chronicles on my blog: http://magic-ian.blogspot.com/2006/03/magical-odyssey-3.html As far as silks, I do about 20% of my lecture using silks and canes and candles. In 83' thru 87', I had several original silk effects in the Tannen's catalog (4 stars in Genii mag), Traveling silks, thumb-dyed, Pepsilkola and Flagtastick. Thanks for mentioning me Bob.

I find that Ade Duval's work is often overlooked, and was quite elegant with a beautiful flow, Magic, Inc, used to carry booklets and gimmicks of his.
Impressive list of 4-star effects in your post Ian, are most still on the market? I love the beauty and grace of silk-magic, my personal belief as with all my magic, is that it must have a "magically-logical" motivation to be included in a presentation, the creative plot-work is the hard part, using rainbows of flowing colors is the joy! I got the Abe Duval book that Magic, Inc. carries and seriously considering upgrading the table and have all the cones, phantom tube, etc made. The silks that he used are now considered to be non-standard sizes. The idea of B**** Art and other color blending seemed very interesting. Cost quickly became a factor. It would be expensive.
The other consideration would be the time it would take to load everything just for a 2-3 minute act. I wish someone had a video of the Rhapsody in Silk as I sure it was very magical and colorful since he used a lot of tie dye colors.
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

But why do your silks have to match his?

Having made a set of cone, tubes etc. for a guy, it is a tough act to make work. You must use it as a basis and adapt it to fit your act.

I think that "Silks Supreme" by Keith Clark (published by Rice in 1942) is a must have! If you study this book along with Clark's "Celebrated Cigarettes" and "Rope Royale" you will get the sense that the author was a real pro, who knew what he was talking about.
I have a very well known mentor that began his professional career based on the material from these books! Best regards, Levent http://www.LeventMagic.com

There is a wealth of material on silk handkerchiefs in the Tarbell Course including many effects from the great minds of the 20th century. Milbourne Christopher's Flash Production and Color change comes to mind as well as 20th Century Silks from Al Baker.
