That's what I hear also. Maybe if you or I were managing a 3.5 BILLION dollar distribution system, as BadSanta was, we would have more clout. Perhaps the "system" that BadSanta is referring to is oooooops! Maybe that's why he is partial.

Bill, congrats, you win the "misinformation" contest. UPS doesn't charge international rates to Hawaii or Puerto Rico, they charge air rates; do note Puerto Rico is treated as an international shipment as far as documentation goes not for customs purposes but because of the tax authority. Only an idiot would ship UPS ground to Canada because of the extra surprise charges and should check before hand, seems that is what most do...
Hey, people, Canada is a different country than the US, and they have their own lil' quirks! Canada does have a wider range of services available to them than other foreign countries. FedEx Second Day is not guaranteed by 3:00 pm. Their standard overnight service is by 3:00 pm, end of business is considered to be 5 pm (for residential, I believe they consider it to be 7 pm). There is not a "gas" surcharge for rural areas, but there is a "fuel surcharge" which is charged by all airlines, carriers, couriers, etc., which covers the unexpected increase in the cost of fuel, and this is across the map. Presently, the ground surcharge with UPS is 6.25%. You should note that you pay a fuel surcharge for virtually anything you buy that goes on a plane or truck, and if you purchase anything that at no time was on a plane or truck, I'd be interested in knowing what it is. I cannot comment on your opinion of people who speak only "street talk". I take it she was a minority? Interesting. My representatives from UPS were always professional, dressed in suits, spoke clearly and made use of proper English, and I didn't have candy or popcorn available for them to take. Well done on keeping the facts straight, or as they say in SC..."Yup." |

Evidently, the reps are different at the North Pole. Nothing professional about the one they sent me. And when I ship, I do expect to know the cost. Don't come back later and say, "Oh yeah, it's $20 more because they were in the country." My experience with UPS was they charged me more than what was agreed upon, and important packages were not delivered on time. The hub here in Columbia doesn't even answer the phone. I can get FedEx on the phone. Sure, every shipper has problems, but not to the extent that UPS does.

Oh, boy. No presents from Santa this year for you, Bill!! Maybe we should stop prodding MagicSanta and this love fest for UPS will end. Gosh darn, Paw, I said I wasn't going to post on this topic anymore.
Here's an idea, let's bubble wrap and box up MagicSanta and send him back to the North Pole by UPS and see once and for all what additional charges we're in for!!! All in say, "YUP!" John |

Since I can't expect the same excitement about logistics as I have, I'll tell you my favorite UPS related story. Back in my early days as a civilian logistics guy (I was military before; that is right, Santa blew up people), UPS brought over this very elderly man in a brown suit. I can't remember his name, but he was the sixth employee hired by UPS and had worked for them ever since, and was a millionaire due to it. He was six years old when they hired him to ride his bike and deliver stuff, and his role at that time (early '80s) was kind of like Buck Rogers' role with IBM back in the early days of computers. As I recall, he spoke clearly.
*Note: Buck Rogers was the marketing guru for IBM, and his name really was Buck Rogers and was born before the character was created. |

Wait...IBM guys, was his name Buck Rogers or Roy Rogers? I'm thinking Buck, but my friend who knew him is no longer living, so the Penny For Your Thoughts guys to contact him.

I remember the good old days like it was just yesterday.
Look at us now. What have we become? Reduced to arguing over the cost of a postage stamp! Destiny |

That is one helluva markup for doing practically nothing. Same box, same weight, same day, same shipping method. Who do they think they're fooling? About once or twice a year I go to the UPS store and leave 10 minutes later with all my boxes re-remembering why I never go there.

I wouldn't go to a UPS Store either, like I said, they charge book then add on top. Anyone else want to agree with me?

I specifically state not to use UPS in any orders and if a dealer has to use them I cancel. They are absolute scam artist. They process customs clearance and charge for it when it is totally not required. I have thousands of dollars worth of postage sent from the States to Australia every year, for many years now, and have never come across such a rip off as UPS

It is NOT a scam it is the way they have to do business. Did you know Australia has 'ad valorum'? Is that a scam? That is when the govt thinks everyone is underpricing goods and adds value to imports when basing duties.
One more time, though I feel like I'm trying to teach statistics at a special ed class, unless it is a document there is an entry process for pretty much every country. There are informal enteries and formal intries, the govt decides the value that separates the two, the formal cost more money. If you want a carrier service look into TNT (founded in Austria) or DHL, they have the cheapest rates....with reason, compared to Fedex or UPS, which are better carriers overall. When comparing all available services, tracking, follow up etc the clear choice is UPS from a business standpoint. Just use the mail service and keep your complaints to yourself if it doesn't show up for weeks. |

We are allowed under $250 import tax free. UPS SCAMS a custom broker fee through their own service. Never happens with Fed X, a much superior company and far more trust worthy or any other mailing service, only UPS. And buy the way, have never lost any delivery through USPS international express which is trackable and as quick as UPS, not to mention a quarter of the price.

Lemme see, I've over a quarter century of experience with both UPS and Fedex as well as TNT, DHL, etc and I can assure you that based on real statistics, real performance worldwide, real world tracking, damage, loss, and customer service Fedex is not the superior of the two. You remind me of a guy I knew who hated UPS because he shipped a plant with them and got upset because they didn't keep it up in the direction his little arrow he drew indicated. UPS isn't running a scam, you or someone else picked them and everything is written out what will be charged etc.. As I've said those of you not involved with business should stick with the USPS, they are there for you.
I'll tell you this, I did a major project checking out all the major small parcel international shippers and UPS won and because I knew what I was doing as did my personel we never had problems. |

We have offices in Houston Texas, Singapore, Norway, London, not to mention 3 in the Middle East. OK you're the expert. Fed X will do us fine though. You're right, UPS are not scamming, just milking the client for all your worth. I'm happy to say we discontinued using UPS 18 months ago and have influenced other regional divisions as well to use other providers. The more this post is opened and read by people on this forum the better informed they will be to stick with other providers. Let me guess, your in customer relations and know whats best. Have a great day!
