Ok here's a list of what I think are the worst impromptu ice breakers, not because the effect isn't strong but because its too strong that people get freaked out...the following effects I usually use as a closer definitely not a ice breaker. Please share your opinions and what you think are worst ice breakers.
Stigmata, HoodWinked, Pen through Cheek, signed card to mouth.

Agreed on the Stigmata choice. I once opened with it and it affected the girl so much she started shaking was almost in tears. Big mistake, after each effect I did after that, she kept asking me how my arm was and was and a bit shook up. It's hard to follow that... a little too strong.

2 words: flash paper. I actually knew someone who would use it, not as an opener, but he would stand in the middle of the restaurant and light it. Once someone looked over he would use that opportunity to approach the table. That's not an effect, it's a crutch for a lack of skill and personality.

Manal and ichazod, great effects definitely a bad closer....Pepka, about the flash paper guy, I remember watching some guy in subway doing the same thing and I just laughed. Yeah he got some looks but the funny thing is people were more amazed in the flash paper then his tricks....

Ok "some" might disagree but I think anything you levitate, or "move" with your mind is a bad opener....I even did once the ole floating match on playing card and all the spectators kept saying was "can you do it again, can you?", I once did used loops as a quick trick for friends but ended up doing others and no matter what I did they kept saying, "make the coin move, how about the card, can you make the spoon move too, do it on my hand?".....

These are several effects that you would not open with, and some good reasoning as to why you wouldn't but what effects do you think are good openers and why?

Although there are thousands of answers for this, here's one I put my finger on.
Colossal Killer. Why? It's a card trick but not standard. It kind of fits the impromptu theme. It’s a nice mental effect that says you know how to do magic without having to tell your spectator that you are a magician. It's not such a strong effect that it overshadows everything else I do following. |

It's not truly impromptu, but I often use Kolossal Killer to end with -- It plays very strong for me. When I get the prediction OBO, those folks usually ask to keep that card, and I find many talking with others about the effect afterwards.

In the beginning of this thread they talk about Stigmata being to strong of an effect. What is the effect? I'm not familiar with it. Why is it too strong of an effect?

Ok, there's several different routines you can do with stigmata. here's one that I do... I ask someone to think of someone special in there life, someone that was important in your past that you lost communication with, someone that you just wish you could see again...Think of that person's name but don't say it out loud and don't tell anyone the person you are just thinking of... I then hand them a business card (not gimmicked) and ask them to write down the person's name and then fold the business card up....I then hold on to the card and begin to burn it a little. Then I have the spectator grab my wrist....I ask them to repeat the name in their mind and squeeze as hard as you can....I then have them let go and tell them to look at my wrist.....
The blood is now circulating and they notice something weird happening. They can see as the blood is circulating the name of the person they thought of somehow appeared on my wrist....I think it's just too strong for a opener, but I love the effect. No gimmicks, Start clean, end clean and totally impromptu. You can make any thought or prediction appear... And that my friend is stigmata...I think I still have it laying around somewhere. Let me know if you're interested... Junior
