YES!!!! I love B&Gs. My February is always packed with them and they are one of the best places to sell BOR.
I always set up a table before the show so that I can point it out during my show. I have never found it a problem to get a couple of adults to help me at the table after the show. One takes the cash, another hands out the product and I sit at the end and sign autographs. I've also had a good rate of success pre-selling product to the pack leader as an add-on sale to my fee. I've found B&G audiences to be very good usually. I actually prefer having the kids sit up front rather than at the tables with their parents. I do a routine right at the beginning of the show which is kind of a game that pitches the kids against the adults. This immediately gets the parents attention and tells them that they are also part of the show. Once you have them involved and laughing along you've got them for the rest of the show. I love B&Gs!!!!! Best, James |

A prop that I have a hard time keeping in stock is the 18" Pro model of 20th Century Silks in Blue/Gold and Blue/Yellow. In about two weeks another shipment arrives from China. I do know that you guys are buying them. Somebody somewhere is doing Blue/Gold magic!
Remember that there is also a Double 4-Color Change silk in 18" that turns from red/white to Blue/Gold. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Another great idea that I use is to upsell or value add on to my B and show offerings. There is always a time at the B and G where the tables are called one at a time to go up and get their food. This happens almost all the time. Now when it does happen, there are tables just sitting there waiting for their turn. This is dead time for them. So noticing this happens a lot, I fugured there is a problem that I can try and solve and make a solution for.
So, I started to offer to the B and G's strolling table side magic for the dinner hour. This is where for an extra amount, I will help them to keep the tables entertained as they are waiting to go up and be called. I do some simple strolling magic that is both themed for scouting and fun for the kids and adults. It does not take me long to do and certainly does not add any real problems for meas I just bring in my strolling case. I have had many B and G clients love this concept and they letch on to it. For them, it solves a need or a problem and they see the fun and value in it. It also gets me the chance to get to know the audience and find my helpers ahead of time before the show starts. In regards to props that Bon was mentioning, I also use blue and gold mouthcoils with blue and gold tissue paper for a fun routine that is themed for scouting and follows the ideasof how a scout must learn to follow directions well. Just some additional food for thought. Kyle

Did the first of a string of BGs today. Great group lots of energy. Too much if you don't have a comading personality. Went great.
I guess my piece of advice is to have a strong show and keep it moving! Anton |

Congradulations, a commanding personality will make everything work. Just remember after succeeding at a Blue and Gold banquet all other kind of shows will be easy. It is the baptism of fire.

Congrats Anton,
Great to hear it went fairly well for you. My wife and I are doing our 7th one this month tonight at a country club and looking forward to it. We enjoy doing them each year and have really figured out what works and how to work it. Like any market, you simply learn the more you do. Scouts have tons of energy for sure. my thing is to try and get them to use that enrgy in a good way and put it to good usage. the first thing I do when I get there is introduce myself to the cub master and ask if it would be ok to get a few scouts to help me bring stuff in. It makes me look good and professional and it does several things for me. I get a chance to take the kid's enrfy and put it to use by helping me bring stuff in. they feel cool about helping me because often times the never get to help or assist in that capacity. I also get to know who they are and about them and get a chance for them to trust me, think I am a good guy and I get to see who may be good helpers. it does make a big difference. Another thing to remember is that they are scouts and in scouting they are to listen and behave as scouts. I use this to my advantage. I complement the pack that brings in the flags for the start of the event. I complement the kids on their uniforms and winning certain awards. I also am not afraid to use the most powerful thing a magician can use for scout Blue and Golds. That is the sign all scouts know that means they must be quiet. Every scout when seeing the sign up in the air knows they are to be quiet. I use this a lot and it makes a huge difference. The adults leaders will see you giving the sign and will join in as well by placing the sign up also. It is a powerful thing that helps to get the kids to calm down more if you need them to. PS: Most times the packs will often times offer you dinner. They usually have way more then they ever need and we always get a great meal from it. Hope this helps. Kyle

Just finished my last B&G this past Sunday. I absolutely love working the scout shows. They can be a challenge, but the last few shows I did were wonderful. I think I finally worked the kinks out of my scout show -- Alas, I won't see any until next Feb now. But the Abracadabra theme really boosted the number of shows this year.

I still have 2 left on my plate to do but my wife and I did at least around 13 of them this season. We really enjoy doing it and this year we marketed not only to Blue and Gold Dinners but also to packs for their Abracadabra themed April meetings. The combination of both worked out very well for us.

If you enjoyed Kyle's posts on this thread, you might also benefit from his new book titled: "Blue and Gold: The Complete Guide to The Scout Market."
http://www.magicenhancer.com/Blue/Gold.html Seems to have some rave reviews from Jim Snack, Ken Scott, Tim Sonefelt, Paul Romhany, and others. I'll bet if you do a Café search with Kyle's name and the keyword "scout", you'll find that he has shared lots of great information. - Donald

I love doing blue and golds. I do about 8-10 every season. I gain a lot of extra business from doing them and typically sell my DVD there as well, which means more $$$.
I must say I have read Kyles book and it really is everything you need to know about these types of shows. Ken |

Yep! Blue/Gold can lead to Green$!
Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Often a parent's or grandparent's business would like to pay your fee rather than have it come out of scout money. Be kind and let them! They want to do something special. |

If you are looking for something new and different to add to next year's scout shows, you might want to check out "Dapper Dan" in the new "Woodcraft Witchcraft" section of my site. There is a version included just for scout shows in which Dan needs help getting his scout uniform in order.

Hi all,
Thank you Donald and also ken for such kind words about my new book/ebook. I really appreciate it. I also thank you Ken for reviewing the book in full and giving the fantastic review that you did. It really means a lot to me knowing so many folks are gaining so much valuable information from what I have written, researched and put together. Ken is right. You can gain a lot of great extra income from working this market. The beauty is that folks do not realize that you can make money from scout shows all year round. It is not just a great market during february and March. I have showed you (in the book) how to specifically create, develop and sell shows for other scout events and scout markets that allows you to perform year round. Bob: absolutely correct. You will find many scout packs have different budgets based on size of the pack and the relationship to the scout council it belongs to. some cases, the scout master etc. may pay you themselves. Also, if you have a situation where budget is an issue, suggest the packs to combine that year to form one big banquet and share the budget as well. Spellbinder: Great suggestion. I actually have this listed in the book (along with a LOT of other trick and rotuine suggestions). This is a great way to customize a show easily and really theme it towards the scouting program. Thanks again folks for the support that has been shown in the first week of the book/ebook release. it is my hopes to get this information out to the folks who can gain so much from it. I GUARANTEE that you will get gigs and gain so much form the information in it. Gary: That is also another effect I have listed in the book along with routine ideas for its usage. I believe it was created by Mike bent and you can also get it through Tim Sonefelt. It goes over really great. You can also use a lot of your standard magic you already own and customize it easily to play for scouts. Kyle
