Can anyone provide information source on the CATO Principle (Cut And Turn Over). Either that or can they provide the principle that applies within this. Thanks so much!

I might be wrong on that one but I think the CATO principle first appeared in Bob Hummer's "Face Up Face Down Mysteries". Some of the tricks in that manuscript were published again in Martin Gardner's "Mathematics Magic and Mystery".

Is this principle referenced in Martin Gardner's book "Martin Gardner Presents"? I'd be curious to know if it is referenced there. Thanks so much for your efforts, much appreciated!

Thanks 10cardsdown for giving me the chance to notice it. I am sure that I can use Mr.Weigle's presentation in my future creations. Hideo Kato |

Does topsy-turvy use this principle?

Thanks so much Hideo, I knew it was in there somewhere, I just couldn't find it. Unfortunately it doesn't reference this as "CATO", but it certainly is the principle involved. Thanks also for the complete list you provided, much appreciated!

I found another CATO trick of Ed Marlo.
Hummer-Marlo, Ed Marlo, Ibidem No.12,December,1957. By the way, CATO stands for "Cut And Turn Over". It used to be called CATTO. (Cut And Turn Two Over). I am now writing an interesting ( at least in principle) CATO trick and will post it in the Secret Session. As I predicted the Weigle presentation would be used in my future creation, that prediction was realized perfectly in that trick. Maybe I will post it tomorrow. It is almost midnight in Japan now. Good night. Hideo Kato phonic69, what trick do you mean by "topsy-turvy"? Hideo Kato |

Also see Phil Goldstein's "Toddler" in "Fifth". A rather roundabout way of forcing the number 18.
I have never been too fond of the principle, seeing as the spectator often completes the procedure behind his back or under the table and repeatedly, giving him ample opportunity for error, therefore sabotaging the end result. Clever? Yes. Would I rely on it? No. Paul. A thread back from the dead! Whilst looking for something else (the beauty of books)I came across what looks like a good application from Peter Duffie not previously listed, "Triple Humdinger" to be found in his 2001 booklet "Cards By All Means". Looks good because it gets the maximum from the minimum. A feature that is usually certain to appeal to me. But I'm still not fond of the principle. Paul. |

Paul, thanks for reviving the principle I am fond of.
"Remote Control Poker" in Duffie/Robinson's CARD CONSPIRACY NO.1 is a very nice CATO trick. Hideo Kato P.S. I posted a CATO trick "CAT-RIUMPH" in the secret session. |

I think in Peter Duffie's Card Conspiracy 1 or 2 (if my memory serves me correctly), Peter covered quite a number of effects based on the CATO Principle.
