Ello...
I got this just after Christmas and have been test driving it down at the local coffee shop. Now some of the reactions I have been getting are so so and other reactions are just nonexistent - the more participants the better - I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or subtleties that might create a bigger impact. Its mostly college students - on campus Starbucks - I've been trying it out on. I am also wanting to tie my Beyond ESP 2 in with it and ideas with this would be appreciated. Anyone actually use B.I.P. as a professional piece or should I put it in my Drawer of Doom? Thanks for your time and pm me if you like... Declan

I retired B.I.P. to the dustheap of forgotten magic props when OUTLAW showed up with their amazing stuff... compare BIP to reflections...

Gentlemen, both Reflections and BIP are winners in their own right.
Whilst I love Reflections, I find BIP to have a much more immediate commercial appeal. I actually use 2 copies of BIP with a married couple on stage, to show how in harmony they, something I could not do as readily with Reflections. Best thoughts to all Hennessey

I'd have to agree with Hennessey on this one that both booktests are different in their own rights.
BIP fits in nicely with my 'English in America' charecter and I find Reflections to be a much deeper routine where as BIP can be a quick series of revelations. Thanks Alexandre for posting, it was actually that video which led me to buy it in the first place - I love all your vids btw - I also like the way BIP can be used with upto 4 people as well, getting all of the group involved and the fact that you can turn the tables and have the spec recieve the information with the psy forces on page one. I have also had 100% success with the country, city and landmark force and this has garnished the best reactions. I am now led to believe that its the way that I'm presenting it that is creating the reactions I'm getting and I will be trying a different approach in the build up. Still if anyone has any ideas that may help... Thanks.

What's nice about Reflections is it's 100% examinable. The spec can hold the book and look through it.
I've also done it with 3 people at one time. Neil Tobin has some great thoughts on this on the Reflections Forum. |

I fully agree that Reflections is a marvelous piece of work. Have never found anything that Outlaw produces to be less than excellent. I own virtually everything Roth produces.(For example, Kioku I have raved about on this forum before, and consider it to be a very underrated performance piece).
However, both Reflections and BIP 2 can play for different audiences at different times, depending on how you want to present it. I would put BIP into the "mentalism lite" category for performance. Whereas Reflections for me goes into the category of "a little deeper mentalism". Hennessey

I use BIP 2.0 regularly -- and my complaint is that it can wear out from use and you (to my knowledge) cannot just buy a replacement refill at a better rate.
The above demonstration is a basic vanilla by Alexandre -- and gets nowhere near the use you can get by putting it into the hands of the spectator (or two at a table) in walk around. If you use the fishing misses right (if they occur) you seem human and truly trying to connect. I cannot comment on the materials from Outlaw -- I have been wanting to get several of their pieces but my doctors prefer to get the money before I buy new props. I feel there is great potential for me in using Reflections and the crime/pawn books (Manhattan) set for walk around. SO -- I have lots of books for sale in the sale section -- -and if you guys buy enough I can get the props and pay the bills.

I actually bought them in reverse order, I bought Reflections, and then bought BIP 2.0 I personally think reflections is so much better, but I use BIP just as much simply because the tests are different and both reflections and BIP seem like geniune psychological tests

Also, what do you mean by "If you use the fishing misses right (if they occur) you seem human and truly trying to connect"? I'm sure many of us here could benefit from your enlightened response to this. Thanks.

Alexandre --thanks for asking. Here's my take on missing and humanity ---- in mentalism.
Too many mentalists (not just today but for years) come from a magic performance background and have been trained in the TV era of couch potatoes who watch and get snack during commercials. Mentalism is a great way to connect with an audience emotionally -- and in my life I have never met anyone who is right 100 per cent of the time. (Some, like presidents and ex-wives may think they are exceptions to this -- but this is about humanity.) I hate to mention (because it has been overworked) the "too perfect theory" that many magicians subscribe to in order to make what looks like mistakes turn into miracles. While surprising and often funny to an audience -- a perfect climax leaves out the connection with the audience's own fallibility. Since I use no overall disclaimer (other than a spiel on evolutionary powers) I indicate that working with the mind is not a 100 per cent accurate art or science. Perceptions --like color blindness (mine) -- can leadto the mis-interpretation of projected thought. I, of course, am not perfect, AND more importantly know that I cannot always accurately read someone's thoughts -- let alone their very private mind. Now you've covered your color in for BIP 2.0. By demonstrating a weakness (not an error) I am human! Developing emotional patter hooks the audience further. Ergo - the ring revelation -- can bring up thoughts of engagement, marriage, divorce, blood diamonds, etc. A key revelation (in other routines) brings up excitement (in men) for their carsand going places. I most often use the time last -- it is an easy out when using multiple subjects (as I do on stage passing the book to three different people.) More than once a volunteer has forgotten the other figure he/she was requestedto remember -- but almost always remembers the time on the page -------- and the time revelation can be tied to taking a coffee break -- becoming tired at work -- starting to wind down for the day. It is those identifiable common actions and emotions we describe with vigor and intensity that actually allows the "fishing" if done in the same style to seem "more real" to audience members. Direct revelation smacks of "instant magic" as opposed to the human process of cmmunication between two minds --- particulary if developed by scholars as a test of POTENTIAL esp powers the audience member may display in transmitting thought to you. Let me say this, too. I have BIP 1 and and never use it -- as version 2.0 allows more connection and work with it. I am happy that it is (I hope) a work in progress. The simplicity of principles and hidden materials works well for me. It allows me to look "human." (Well, as human as older former illusionists can look.)

The reactions I get from using B.I.P. 2.0 are off the scale. After every performance in which I use it, I have to disuade onlookers after my set from believing that I am actually reading minds. It amazes me that some experienced performers get no more than mediocre reactions from this. Arnon |

Arnon,
I fully agree. BIP 2. is a marvelous prop. I actually use 2 of them with 2 spectators on stage to illustrate how much they, the spectators are in harmony. A great couples routine, which leads into the marvlous Double Vision booktest. Hennessey

For those of you who use BIP (I'm contemplating getting it for when I'm hired for strolling work) Have you altered it any way? The description says it uses European cities and landmarks, but the vid clip of Alexandre used words with associated objects. If you did alter it, how difficult was it?

Sean,
BIP 2.0 works fine for North American audiences. The earlier version had some UK references, but not the second. No changes needed in 2.0. Enjoy it. Hennessey

The only potential confusion is that the time is in military (24hour) format. Many people are not familiar with this format and there could be confusion with it, and a misunderstand on “which number” they select (the time as a number, or the number). You might need to explain each element before the selections.
