Khayman,
I liked the sponge ball video too. All these experts here are only impressed with the latest stuff. I thought the video was entertaining and lively. Sure I sold a bunch of those props as a kid. It doesn't mean you couldn't build a wonderful routine out of them. Just because you've known how an effect works for years and years doesn't mean you shouldn't be doing it!! Don't post anymore derivitave poop on YouTube. Work up a routine using the gaffs you saw on the video that you liked. Go find real people to perform it for. Collecting numbers on a website, for self-aggrandizment will NOT make you a better magician. Mr. Murphy is spot on here! If you're going to do billiard balls. Please don't use sponges. The trick has a beautiful and storied history. You'll advance your skills as a manipulator if you learn a solid routine with solid balls. He's right about using all solid balls. (In my routine I cheat and use a sh***, oh no!) Start with small ones. Get the Fakini balls and work your way up. Now go learn some spongeball stuff! Kent |

Thank you that really lifted my spirit again
I will contiue to use my lovely spongeballs and I am really interested in those solid balls. Are those Fakini balls the next step for me after sponge? or should I go through with cups and balls first.. I'm really curious in both. Thanks again Kentfgunn |

Khayman,
It will really depend on what effects you want to do. The common thread between sponge balls, billiard balls, and cups & balls would mainly be the fact that they all use balls. Each is very distinct and unique from the other. Not just in effect, but in many methods used (of course some do overlap). So I wouldn't say that there is a set order for you to go in. If you are interested in both, seek out and study both. The Fakini balls are a great, professional item. If you start with those, you'll make life much easier for yourself. I started with wooden balls and learned that way. The Fakini balls are made of silicone and are easier to grip. And even though billiard balls can incorporate a gimmick, it doesn't mean no sleight of hand is used in the routines. Quite the contrary. |

It's very common. Look up Cardini or Frank Garcia on YouTube.

Billiard balls (I use fakini) are wonderful. To get the idea, there's nothing wrong with using the sponge variety but real billiard balls are just great.
If you like coin magic, why not try to do it with billiard balls. There are many benefits over coins: Color changes that are wonderful Vanishes are tremendous due to the size of the ball Much easier to see Plays to a much larger crowd There are ] routines and non-shell routines out there. All have benefits. Billiard balls are awesome.

Frank :
Speaking of balls, I received a set of your monkey fist balls yesterday. I couldn't be happier........beautifully wrapped and perfectly weighted. Congratulations on your workmanship. Fortasse |

I had a set of those Magic Inc. multiplying sponge balls. The sponge was a lot firmer than was used for regular sponge balls, this was before the "supersoft" ones came out. It made it easier to use. The flocking would wear off the gimmick though, and as Bill stated, they didn't look as great in person.
As far as gimmick or not to gimmick, if you were fooled and thought it was real slight of hand, isn't that what the proper use of a gimmick should should do ? What's wrong with using one ? It fooled you guys. It would have fooled me too if I hadn't owned a set at one time. JH |

I agree with Frank on the billiard balls.
I was taught that gimmicks are for those too lazy to learn the craft of sleight of hand/manipulation/mime (yup, mime plays a HUGE role)... you should be able to blow people away with three real golf balls for a few dollars..and what's great about mastering real sleight of hand instead of relying on a gimmick is that if you lose the golf balls, you go to a pro shop and get more..or to any golf course, walmart..wherever. You lose that precious gimmick and you are SCREWED. Billiard balls, golf balls, Fakini's are great (but if you lose them...) Just a thought... Chris oh, yeah, and the fact that by learning how to do it "for real" elevates our art form. Okay to start with a gimmick ,that's for sure, but at some point, you gotta move on.... |
